Turn, Turn, Turn plus The Scarlett Goodbye
It’ll be a memorable evening as Turn Turn Turn and The Scarlet Goodbye, two great bands featuring popular Minnesota music legends, get together Under The Canopy.
Turn Turn Turn is a trio who bonded over their mutual love of close harmony 60s and 70s country, folk, and pop music and formed an original Americana band. To create their distinctive sound, the band “turns” to the distant past of early American recorded music, “turns” again to that renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s, and finally “turns” again to the present looking forward. Even though Turn Turn Turn was born as a cover band, the group’s original material – sweetheart alt-country folk-pop – quickly stole the spotlight.
Turn Turn Turn’s Laurel Canyon meets 70’s-Nashville-cosmic soul vibe is layered with three-part harmonies that stitch the band’s musical tapestry together. Members Adam Levy (guitars, vocals), Savannah Smith (guitar, vocals) and Barb Brynstad (bass, vocals) are all mainstays of the Minnesota music scene and together craft an infectious, pop-infused Americana. They each have a distinct voice, and the combination – a “fourth voice” – is greater than the sum of its parts.
Adam Levy is a veteran of the Minnesota rock scene, best known for leading up the alt-rock band The Honeydogs. As a prolific songwriter and producer, he has worked across many genres and performed worldwide. Besides writing, recording, and performing music, Adam is a social activist and educator, teaching high school students social studies and songwriting.
Savannah Smith has worked with such acts as Trampled by Turtles, William Elliot Whitmore and Laura Stevenson. In 2019, Savannah released her debut full-length album, Leo. The follow-up to her EP Leaving Eau Claire, it was written in a house built by her great-grandfather and was recorded and produced Minneapolis’ Brett Bullion (Low, Halloween Alaska, Bad Bad Hats).
Barb Brynstad is an in-demand musician with decades-long roots in the Twin Cities music community. As a singer, bassist and guitarist, she has performed with a variety of musicians, including Chastity Brown, Tina Schlieske, and the late-great Willie Murphy. She has also performed with comedian Lizz Winstead (The Daily Show) and contributes her musical talents to a variety of theater and dance projects.
The Scarlet Goodbye, labelled “the most unlikely mash-up in Minnesota Music History”, is the creative combination of Daniel Murphy and Jeff Arundel.
Daniel D. Murphy was a critical element in the formation of two favorite bands, Soul Asylum and Golden Smog, sharing the stage with fellow hitmakers Dave Pirner, Gary Louris, and Jeff Tweedy. After a career at the top, including the GRAMMY for “Runaway Train” and sharing the biggest stages around the world, Danny decided he was ready to leave the road, and, in 2012, stepped aside.
A chance meeting at a 2019 holiday party with Minnesota yacht-rocker Jeff Arundel was the bait. Arundel had released 8 records of original songs, toured extensively, and was also active as a producer of various artists including Bryan White, Keri Noble, Billy McLaughlin, and Adrianne Lenker. And, the most unlikely mash-up in Minnesota music history was formed and off to the races.
With the first collaboration, “Paris”, they realized that they were onto something, as Murphy shoved Arundel into a swagger, and Arundel tip-toed Murphy onto revealing some vulnerabilities. Meeting in an attic studio during the Pandemic, Murphy and Arundel fashioned a collection of songs that producer John Fields, who was brought in to mix the record, calls “both timeless and unique, part Rolling Stones and part Townes Van Zandt”.
In 2022, The Scarlet Goodbye released three singles and a video to critical acclaim, and has performed on stages large and small, bracing for the 2023 release of their full-length record “Hope’s Eternal”, on Ingrooves/Universal, via Nashville’s The Label Group.
