Roots, Rock, & Deep Blues & MN Blues Society Presents:

Sugaray Rayford + Blood Brothers

with Lightnin’ Malcolm

For the health and safety of all concerned – the audience, the performers, and our volunteers and staff – we’re moving Thursday night’s show with Sugaray Rayford + The Blood Brothers indoors into our air-conditioned main theater.

Two multiple award-winning headlining acts, Sugaray Rayford and the Blood Brothers (Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia) will be joining forces Under the Canopy for an incredible evening of blues, R&B, and soul.  The party continues after our outdoor curfew with Lightnin Malcolm performing on the indoor Hook & Ladder stage.
Sugaray Rayford blends funky grooves, rocking blues and R&B with his raw power as a vocalist and entertainer. His vocals are unmistakably full bodied and incredibly soulful.  Pop Matters declared he “will appeal to fans of Gary Clark Jr. and Chicano Batman.” At his core, Sugaray Rayford is a galvanizing uniter. His live shows are a party. Some conversations may be had, and some self-reflection may occur, but at the end of the day, people leave feeling a sense of joy and togetherness.

Blood Brothers   (Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia) will be rolling into the Hook & Ladder in support of the new Blood Brothers album, which was produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith and recorded at Dockside Studio in Maurice, Louisiana.  They will bring together their two powerhouse bands and both will be onstage performing together for the entire show; so, fans can enjoy the amazing chemistry and creativity that these two musicians share with each other – and the audience. In addition to their own  rock, blues and roots individual tunes, the set will feature a number of songs from the Blood Brothers album.

Lightnin Malcolm is a cutting-edge Mississippi Bluesman, a charismatic and energetic guitar slinger with a deep soulful voice and has taken his irresistible dance grooves from Juke Joint teen years to World Stages. Malcolm learned directly from blues masters touring with R.L. Burnside, T Model Ford, Big Jack Johnson, Robert Belfour, etc. He’s developed a uniquely funky and hypnotic bass/rhythm/lead simultaneous “full band” guitar sound, as one-man band with foot drums or power duo with drummer (notably Cedric Burnside). In 2009 Malcolm won the Blues Music Award Emerging Artist Award.  fusing raw electrifying blues power and fresh melodic songwriting with elements of Funk, Soul, Rock, Reggae, Hip Hop, African World Beat, Gospel and Country to create an Authentic melodic signature sound.
The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.
