British roots guitarist/songwriter Davy Knowles has been receiving heaps of praise for his newest release What Happens Next. Special guests from Chicago, The Claudettes, will unleash their rocking' party sounds to kick off the evening. Isle-Of-Man born roots guitarist /singer-songwriter Davy Knowles burst onto the scene at the age of 20 with his band Back Door Slam, making national US TV appearances on shows such as Jimmy Kimmel and Good Morning America, earning extensive radio airplay, and achieving two Top 5 Billboard Blues charting albums. On the aptly-titled What Happens Next, Knowles boldly steps forward with timeless and cohesive songwriting, sleek modern production, and a lyrical, play-for-the-song guitar approach informed from soul, folk, rock, and blues. The album is just as influenced by The Black Keys, Fantastic Negrito, Gary Clark Jr., as it is Muddy Waters, Junior Kimbrough, and R.L. Burnside. The Claudettes fuse Chicago piano blues with the full-throttle energy of rockabilly and punk and the sultriness of '60s soul to write a thrilling new chapter in American roots music. Johnny Iguana pounds the piano alongside seductive singer Berit Ulseth, bassist/guitarist/singer Zach Verdoorn and drummer Michael Caskey. Johnny, who toured for years with his cult-favorite rock band Oh My God, is also in the Grammy-nominated group Chicago Blues: A Living History and the Muddy Waters 100 Band. He has toured/recorded with Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and more and played piano on the new Chicago Plays the Stones album featuring Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Buddy Guy. The Claudettes recorded their 2018 album Dance Scandal At The Gymnasium with Grammy-winning producer Mark Neill (Black Keys, Old 97's, J.D. McPherson). They worked with Grammy-winning producer Ted Hutt (Violent Femmes, Lucero, Old Crow Medicine Show, Gaslight Anthem, The Devil Makes Three) on their 2020 album High Times in the Dark and have been spending recent months working on another new album which will be released later this year.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Rain Taxi Presents

Jeffrey Yang and Anni Liu

Join us for an evening featuring acclaimed poet, translator, and editor Jeffrey Yang presenting his latest poetry collection, Line and Light (Graywolf Press), a volume that deftly traces lines of energy through art, myth, and history, and is hailed by Kyoo Lee as “a ground-breaking work of what we might call estuary poetics.” Yang will be joined by Minneapolis poet Anni Liu as she celebrates her debut book Border Vista (Persea Books), which intimately narrates the experience of being undocumented in America and about which Ross Gay says “I have scarcely in my life encountered more rapt and rapturous looking.” In these riveting new books, each of these poets investigates issues crucial to our time and lights the way forward into a territory that may be challenging but is eminently worth traveling.
