Jazz Age Rumpus III: The Sounds of Chicago

Featuring Southside Aces, Miss Myra & The Moonshiners, & High Noon

—–

Bask in a day of 1920s and ‘30s jazz! Year three of the festival celebrates Chicago. Listeners and dancers, you’ll get to hear the music of King Oliver, one of the founding fathers of jazz who gave his young protege Louis Armstrong his first big break. Jimmie Noone, the astounding clarinetist who set the bar oh-so-high with his small band at The Nest. And finally, Harlem Hamfats, who kept the party going in the ‘30s, backing up iconic R&B singer Rosetta Howard. Welcome all you dancers in town for Midwest Lindy Fest! We’ll see you on the dance floor.

For twenty years the Southside Aces have performed the music of Jazz Age greats such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Fats Waller, to name a few. They’ve played for clubs, dancers, and festivals in the Twin Cities and throughout the midwest, including the 50th Anniversary Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival in the summer of 2021. They’ve released eight albums of jazz including their newest, Minneapolis Bump, featuring all originals in the traditional style.

Miss Myra and The Moonshiners are a formidable 5-piece swing band from Minneapolis, MN with a fresh sound grounded in early jazz and blues. Playing original music amid a broad repertoire of classics from the ‘20s and ‘30s, they have developed a singular style that delights audiences and dance halls with the spirit of a musical tradition at its centennial. The group has made appearances at Bayfront Blues Festival, Fargo Blues Fest, Sioux Falls Jazz Festival, among others.

High Noone is a new band dedicated to the music of clarinetist Jimmie Noone. It’ll be like stepping into The Nest Club at 35th and Calumet in late 1920s Chicago, where Noone led his hot jazz quintet, unusual for having no brass. Alto saxophonist Brad Holden joins clarinetist Tony Balluff in the front line, while pianist Ted Godout takes on the role of Earl Hines, and bassist Josh Granowski and drummer Dave Michael round out the rhythm.
