The station went on the air in 1978 with studios located in Walker Church and has been the voice of our community ever since. For their birthday celebration\, they have curated an entertaining evening of music and fun. \n— \nKFAI’s MinneCulture presents Live from Minnesota: Turtle Island Voices Rising. Celebrating Minnesota American Indian Month with hosts Deanna StandingCloud and Trish Cook and performances by Tufawon and Tiana Spotted Thunder. \n— \nThe event is free and open to the public. Simply sign up for your free tickets! \n— \nTufawon (2 for 1) is a Dakota/Boricua singer\, songwriter\, producer\, and teaching artist from Minneapolis. His name represents his mixed identity\, and his music is an honest reflection of his life experiences\, personal struggles\, his hopes and dreams for the future\, spirituality\, connectedness to the land\, love\, and the realities of the world. Musically\, he creates a broad spectrum of styles including Hip Hop\, RnB\, Dancehall\, Reggaeton\, and Afrobeats. He has put his life on the line to protect the water and our planet thru protest and community organizing. Not only is he dedicated to making music at the highest quality\, he is an active youth worker\, teaching what he knows and setting the bar high for the next generation of songwriters. \n— \nTiana Spotted Thunder is a Lakota recording artist from Oglala\, South Dakota\, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She is a vocalist of many genres\, but specializes in singing traditional Lakota and indigenous music. She travels throughout North America to powwows as a backup singer for drum groups as well as performing solo for various audiences. Her vocal range reveals the pride of her identity as a Lakota woman. \n— \nDeanna StandingCloud is a mom\, playwright\, organizer\, artist\, community leader\, pow-wow emcee\, and advocate for Indigenous people. A member of the Red Lake Nation\, an Anishinaabe or Ojibwe tribe\, StandingCloud’s role as an emcee is just one aspect of a life that intertwines both tradition and modernity. She found her calling in weaving words and telling stories\, unlike the rest of her family who are more gifted in the visual arts. She studies Ojibwe\, the Anishinaabe language\, writes plays for New Native Theatre in St. Paul\, and performs as a stand-up comedian. As a leader and connector within her community\, she uses humor and storytelling to share her culture and break Native stereotypes. She has been entertaining audiences for years with her humor and expressive storytelling. SUMMARY:TELEPORT 004 - An Evening of Psychedelic Chillout Music: Ancient Fruit\, Squig\, Kitten Candy
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Zen Arcade Stageat The Hook and Ladder’s Mission Room \n\nDoors 8:30pm :: Music 9pm :: 21+\n$10 Box-Office /  $12.16 Online / $15 Door\n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nTELEPORT 004 – An Evening of Psychedelic Chillout Music: Ancient Fruit\, Squig\, Kitten Candy\n— \nThis installment of Teleport differs from the previous ones in a few ways. For one\, Teleport 004 will feature ambient and downtempo music. I have long thought that a showcase of psybient and psy chillout music would be very worthwhile. There is so much variety within this heading and so much good music that only people in psytrance world seem to know about. The music programming has departed slightly from this initial picture\, all in good ways. The entire evening will feature live performance. The artists—Kitten Candy\, Squig\, and Ancient Fruit—are all dedicated\, multitalented\, experimental artists who will bring a variety and progression that is ideal for this emerging concept. \nThe event will be in Zen Arcade at the Hook and Ladder Theater\, which is also new for Teleport. The arrangement and deco plan are being worked out (as I am still pretty unfamiliar with that space)\, as is the visual programming by Kid Cuisine (who created the beautifully tailored flyer image for this unique installment). The aim is to make the Zen Arcade feel like a chill space at a music festival—relaxing\, cozy\, and wildly engaging. \n— \nBOX-OFFICE Tickets Are Available in The Zen Arcade During Hours of Operation. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe.\n \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation\, and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band Davina and The Vagabonds in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA\, which she now describes as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” She was adopted by her much older stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed away when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says.\n \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player where she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath\, and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom.\n \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school\, which morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail\, and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band\, and worked [her] ass off every day since.”\n \nDavina and the Vagabonds shine every time they play. To date\, they’ve performed in forty-five states\, twelve European countries\, and two Canadian provinces. Not to mention\, they’ve earned feverish acclaim from the Chicago Tribune\, NPR\, and more in addition to performing on BBC’s international favorite late-night program Later… With Jools Holland and appearing on PBS’s Bluegrass Underground.\n—\n“Davina and the Vagabonds combat heartache with sugar and sass.”  DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE \n\n“Singer\, songwriter\, guitarist and “Boss Mama” Colleen Myhre has connected with a loose band of hard-rocking desperados and dubbed them the Jebberhooch.  Together\, Boss Mama and the Jebberhooch put out dusty\, dirty\, gritty blues that rumble across the stage like a beat-up sedan over a Mississippi Delta dirt road.  Their sound is a shake-and-baked helping of country soul\, blood harmony and deep groove funkiness.   \n\n\n \n\nThank you to our sponsors\, partners\, & neighbors: \nSummit Brewing • DuNord Social Spirits • RKR Ganja Beverages • Nobool Presents • KFAI 90.3FM • Mpls.St.Paul Magazine • The Zen Arcade • Longfellow Rising • Lake Street Council • Minnesota State Arts Board • Moon Palace Books • Arbeiter Brewing\n\n \nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2025. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.\n \nThe Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests. Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Shake out your worries to the infectious rhythms of Dilly Dally Alley and then reflect and smile as you hear the hopeful stories of Roland Faunte. This evening will be a worldwide tour around the planet of your emotions!—\nRoland Faunte wrote his first song at 11 years old\, claiming that if you pretended to be a snake for long enough\, you would eventually become a snake. This message of self-determination turned out to be more prescient than he ever could have imagined. After his health collapsed at 19\, he found himself at the whims of chronic disease. Having lost control of his thoughts and body\, he lost faith in his ability to shape his life.\n \nOver years of trying different treatments and rebuilding his spiritual infrastructure\, Roland finally returned to that 11-year-old’s understanding: before we can become\, we first have to believe. The science is not yet settled on whether or not this applies to becoming a snake\, but we are free to find health and harmony in the meantime.\n \nDilly Dally Alley:\nWith a name that will make you smile and music that will make you move\, Dilly Dally Alley exists at the crossroads of levity\, depth\, laughter\, and groove. Their 2024 singles “Find Out”\, “That I’m Pretty”\, and “This Just In” will leave you scrambling for a time machine so you can blast to the future and take a spin of their forthcoming album. The vocals soar you into the mountains while the brass arrangements float you down a river. The only words found to really capture the experience are ”oh hot damn”. Whatever you’re looking for in music\, you can find it in the Dilly Dally Alley.\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

The evening will feature supporting performances from friends and collaborators *Splash!* and Ditch Pigeon\, making it a magical\, heartfelt\, and intimate listening experience from beginning to end. \n \nLed by composer and lyricist Caitlin Benson\, Paper Chain’s music is the effortless synthesis of modern chamber-pop with 19th century romantic composers such as Beethoven\, Schumann\, and Grieg. Caitlin’s writing straddles the feelings of open prairie skies and hurried metropolitan energy.\n \n*Splash!*: With heartfelt\, literary lyrics and captivating melodies delivered in a soaring tenor range\, *Splash!* brings you musical reflections inspired by philosophy\, mysticism\, and spiritual practice. His unique warmth provides a balm for your weary soul.\n \nDitch Pigeon: Ditch Pigeon (Hayley Anne) has been actively performing for several years as a solo artist and a part of bands. She is one of the busiest and most popular performers in the Twin Cities area for her extraordinary singing and songwriting skills and complex but charming character.\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Local indie pop band KYM and the Kick invites you to celebrate the release of their energetic freshman album “The Gift of Feeling.”  This ten-track album is the band’s ode to feeling deeply in a culture that suppresses our feelings at every opportunity. Supported by Alonzo and Poison Ivy and the People\, this night is for lovers of queer pop and art as resistance! \n \nKYM and the Kick is a cheeky\, queer indie pop band from the Twin Cities\, MN. After releasing their EP ‘Not 4 U’ in 2020 under the band’s solo name\, KYM and the Kick step into their new era with equally danceable indie pop tracks. KYM’s dreamy vocals and layered harmonies are well-complemented by their band’s funky bass lines\, dynamic drum fills\, and 80s synth pop melodies. \n \nAlonzo is 3 friends who like to have fun. Their sounds range from bossa nova\, easy listening to disco to incidental television music. They enjoy being the wallpaper for any good-time event. From a beginner to an advanced listener\, Alonzo has something for everyone.\n \nPoison Ivy And The People is a five piece theatrical rock band based in Minneapolis\, MN\, and fronted by Ivy (aka Charleigh Wolf). Themes of mental illness\, profound existentialism\, big questions about the world\, and social change give listeners an inside view into Ivy’s abstract inner monologue. Ivy’s extensive background in theatre lends itself to highly dramatic performances that captivate audiences and leave them thoroughly entertained.\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

A masterful Grammy Award-winning violinist\, singer/songwriter\, actor\, and composer\, Lisa has an uncanny way of taking those audiences with her wherever she goes.\n—\nRecognized for her work as violinist and vocalist for the ground breaking Jewish Roots band The Klezmatics and as fiddler for the “Downtown” Celtic band Whirligig\, Lisa is also known for her scoring\, performance\, and music direction in the two time Tony award-winning play\, Indecent. She had an on-screen cameo and compositions featured in Sex and the City; has performed in Sting’s Broadway musical The Last Ship; and her song Gonna Get Through This World – with words by Woody Guthrie – was hailed by Pete Seeger as “a piece of genius”. Lisa’s playing and stories are fun and poignant\, and her voice has been praised by the LA Times as “hauntingly emotional.”   —\nDi Bayke Klezmer Band (backing band for Lisa Gutkin) plays the energetic party music of Eastern European Jewish tradition. A supergroup made of celebrated Twin Cities musicians\, including Pat O’Keefe\, Sarah Larsson\, Josh Rosard\, Daniel Lentz\, and Anthony Afful; Di Bayke has collectively studied with master-artists from klezmer tradition\, including Lisa Gutkin of The Klezmatics\, Ethel Raim of The Pennywhistlers\, and Michael Alpert of Brave Old World. Di Bayke’s adventurous takes on beloved Klezmer and Yiddish sounds encourage audiences to get on their feet and explore family stories of journey\, roots\, and home. Bayke is Yiddish for “tall tale”\, and is an acronym for Backyard Klezmer Ensemble\, which is where the band got started: playing outside during the COVID pandemic. (say: “Dee Bye-keh”)\n—\nAhmed Yusuf & Araa Ensemble is the project of Minneapolis-based author and educator Ahmed Ismail Yusuf. Committed to revitalizing the Somali musical genre of Qaraami\, Araa Ensemble brings together star vocalists and instrumentalists from the Midwestern Somali diaspora. Araa Ensemble has played their repertoire of Qaraami\, which JD Steele describes as “Somalia’s blues\,” at St. Thomas University\, St. John’s University\, and been featured on the Twin Cities’ Jazz88. The ensemble creates an intimate\, living-room atmosphere and invites audiences in to feel like members of the band. \nhttps://www.mprnews.org/story/2025/04/04/somali-blues-and-black-soul-music-in-cross-cultural-collaboration\n\n\n\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
