DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n		RSVP ON FACEBOOK\n	\n\n\n	\n		\n\n	\n	\nThe Hook and Ladder Theater \n\nDoors 7pm :: Music 7:30pm :: 21+\nGA: $22 ADV (Box Office) / $27 Door\n\n		\n					\n\n	\n\n	\n				\n			\n			\n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n		\n\n	\n	\nThe Belfast Cowboys\n\n \n\nThe Belfast Cowboys are a nine-piece\, horn-driven band from Minneapolis that specializes in the music of Van Morrison – mixing rock\, blues\, roots and soul sounds.  They have become one of Minnesota’s (and The Hook & Ladder’s) most popular bands.\n \nLed by veteran songwriter and guitarist Terry Walsh and powered by a four-piece horn section\, the Cowboys have flourished in the renowned Minnesota music scene\, and have consistently packed houses and wowed crowds since 2002.\n \nTerry Walsh got his start playing in various Twin Cities rock bands and toured as Slim Dunlap’s bass player in 1997\, opening for Son Volt. In 2001\, the idea to form a Van Morrison tribute band was formed\, and Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band\, with Joe Loskotaon keyboards and Vic Volare running the horn section. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002. \n\n \nMany musicians played with the band over the first few years\, and continue to do so today\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established: Dan Kowalke on guitar and backing vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota(keyboards\, backing vocals)\, Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare(sax\, flute) and Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano). \n\nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers along with Terry’s own originals\, which have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing large crowds to outdoor festivals. The answer lies in ‘Trickery’\, the seventh album from gothic post-punk legends Then Comes Silence.  \n \nIt’s 2022\, and on the eve of their first-ever US tour and eager to promote their stellar albums ‘Machine’ (2020) and ‘Hunger’ (2022) for the first time\, Then Comes Silence are suddenly and unexpectedly reduced to a three-piece.  Would their famed darkwave wall-of-sound still work with just the three bandmembers? The answer was resoundingly positive\, so much so that the band resolved to continue with the slimmed-down line-up on a permanent basis on further US (supporting Vision Video and The Bellwether Syndicate) and European tours\, and now on their return to the studio. This inadvertent metamorphosis of the band has led to a different way of creating music and performing live. \n \nTo capture the heart and essence of the trio’s live prowess\, ‘Trickery’ was recorded in just three days in Kapsylen Studio in Stockholm. With Jonas Fransson (in the band since 2015) laying down an energetic punk backbeat and sleaze punk fan Hugo Zombie (a 2018 recruit) providing inventive and rhythmic guitar lines\, the main focus remains on singer and bassist Alex Svenson\, sole surviving member from the band’s 2012 debut album\, whose velvety croon and solid bass lines are enhanced on ‘Trickery’ by retro synth sounds reminiscent of his recent solo futurist wave project Neonpocalypse. “The electronic elements are essential to ‘Trickery’\,” Alex says\, “but are also a salute to punk music\, the cradle of Then Comes Silence and the cradle of post-punk“. \n \nThe band’s existential crisis also resulted in a re-assessment of their very raison d’être\, and this is reflected lyrically on the new album. Then Comes Silence explain that ‘Trickery’ celebrates friendship\, unity and the feeling of belonging to a group\, a tribe.\n \n\n“Being a part of what many people call ‘the goth and post-punk community’ is a great privilege. After being on the road meeting people from the music scene for so many years\, we have experienced a caring and welcoming community. Both old and young\, some with a similar background and some just for the love of the music and the culture that comes with the lifestyle. No-one is free from apprehension and fear. Here’s their story from the last decade….\n \nLike many musicians who play the music of Django Reinhardt in the US\, Mississippi Hot Club was spurred by a love for bluegrass picking. It was around 2013 when MHC lead guitarist\, Joshua Parlanti\, and former rhythm player\, Luke Zupan\, were at home working out an old-timey tune\, when Luke asked\, “Have you ever thought about doing Django stuff?” But Josh recalled “Limehouse Blues” by Reinhardt\, and at the time\, playing jazz manouche seemed like an insurmountable task.\n \nAs Josh and Luke toyed with more approachable Django numbers\, such as “Minor Swing” and “Dark Eyes\,” they were active in the bluegrass band Natural Gadget\, with Ian Stenlund\, his brother Kai\, and JP. The group played at clubs like Nomad for a couple years\, and have one recording to crystallize that moment in time.\n \nEventually\, Josh and Luke’s love for Django led them to add more gypsy jazz songs to their repertoire. As members of Natural Gadget moved out of town\, Josh and Luke found new musicians to collaborate with who had a similar budding interest in the genre. Craig Sandberg joined the fold playing upright bass. Excited about their progress\, they began the search for a violin player to complete the true Hot Club ensemble. Craig knew of a classically trained violin player\, Alissa Jacobsen\, who was also playing in old-timey bands in the area.\n \nAlissa was not familiar with jazz manouche\, and when agreeing to join the group\, thought that she was joining a punk group a la Gogol Bordello. She took to the songs and improvisational style immediately – and now Alissa filled the space beside Django that Stephane Grappelli once did.\n \nAfter compiling enough songs for a live set\, their first show as a band with Josh\, Alissa\, Luke\, and Craig was held at now defunct Honey club\, opening for now long-time collaborators The Gentlemen’s Anti-Temperance League. During this time\, MHC live sets were a mix of bluegrass and gypsy jazz.\n \nWith this line-up\, they recorded their debut album\, Hidden Willow Farm\, recorded in a barn at Alissa’s grandmother’s farm in 2014. Josh was the engineer.\n \nNot long after their first gig and recording\, Craig announced that he would be moving out of state. Josh called Ian and asked for the phone number of a bass player that Ian knew\, Jason Stanek. Ian told Josh that he would give him the number if he could play rhythm in the band as well. Ian had learned the la pompe style of rhythm from his buddy in high school\, Sam Miltich\, who by that time was a world-wide-recognized gypsy jazz guitarist. Josh agreed\, and now MHC had two rhythm guitar players and a new bass player for a time.\n \nJason didn’t stick around long\, and Joseph Downing saw MHC perform at 331 Club. He mentioned wanting to play bass with MHC\, so Joe entered as Jason left. This was also a pseudo reunion\, as Josh\, Luke\, Ian and Joe are all from the Iron Range town of Grand Rapids\, MN (Alissa is originally from Stillwater\, but we call her our surrogate Grand Rapidian). This line-up continued for many years. In 2016\, they recorded Flour & Sawdust on the 2nd floor of a duplex that Ian was renting. This record was engineered by Kai Stenlund\, and mixed by Kai and Josh.\n \nJust one year later\, in 2017\, MHC booked their first session at a professional studio\, Wild Sound Recording Studio\, where they produced Swing Cities with Steve Kaul behind the board. Josh and Ian then mixed the record in a basement that Josh was renting in Uptown. As a matter of fact\, after returning the mixes to Steve for mastering\, Josh was hired as an engineer at Wild Sound.\n \nThroughout this time\, they performed at venues and festivals in the Twin Cities and in Wisconsin\, including Twin Cities Jazz Fest\, were hired to play several weddings and other private parties\, and curated the annual Prohibition Swing Night\, first at the Bedlam\, then several at the Hook and Ladder.  They began to fully develop their current sound during a residency at Palmer’s Bar when Josh primarily played electric guitar and the band began to stretch out the solo sections\, resulting in a unique\, somewhat modernized interpretation of the Hot Club sound.\n \nNow\, when they are on stage together\, MHC has the connection and energy that only a 10 years of playing together can create.
