But\, whatever expectations they’d first conjured of a typical tour stop melted away as they\, along with millions of other Americans\, watched in horror as ICE terrorized this great city. \n \nInstead of dropping the date altogether\, local friends encouraged them\, “the time for music is now.” And so they reconfigured and planned a night of rest and recuperation for the wonderful people of Minneapolis.\n \nJesse had heard from friends on the ground about MONARCA-MN\, equipping observers to defend free speech\, peaceful protest and due process\, and needing donations. “I wonder about actually making it a fundraiser from people who DON’T live in Minneapolis\,” David said\, “for them to donate\, rather than asking the people there in the middle of the front lines to do it.” \n \nWe don’t want money to be a barrier for anyone who wants to attend. If you’re not able to contribute to the MONARCA fundraiser\, please feel free to use the promo code MONARCAMN for one of the limited number of respite tickets we’re reserving for folks who need an evening of rest and community. \n \nAnyone can donate at the door if they’re so moved. The good folks at Wrecktangle are donating pizza to feed anyone there who’s hungry. “We’d especially love for our friends\, family and fans outside of Minnesota to help us offer this show to the people of Minneapolis\, to those fighting for freedom and justice for all of us\,” Jesse said. “After we make sure the staff at Hook & Ladder get paid and cover their costs\, we’re going to donate all proceeds from this show to MONARCA and their work with immigrants and protesters.” https://monarcamn.org/

Using the music of The Ventures\, The Shadows\, Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point\, the band has taken their unique\, high energy brand of instrumental rock & roll around the world. \n \nWearing their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks\, Los Straitjackets have also served as the backing band for Nick Lowe since 2016. Their latest release\, Somos Los Straitjackets demonstrates why Los Straitjackets have reigned as the kings of modern instrumental rock for over thirty years with shimmering tremolo\, relentless drum grooves\, and hooks so catchy they don’t need lyrics to get stuck in your head.\n \nDeke Dickerson is a West Coast musician\, singer\, and author specializing in vintage roots music\, including rockabilly\, honky-tonk\, blues\, and garage rock. He was named Ameripolitan Musician of the Year. \n \nEqual parts sincere archivist and irreverent innovator\, Dickerson imbues his recordings with considerable production sense\, droll humor\, and doubleneck-guitar know-how to spare. He’s a skilled singer-songwriter with an impressive knack for recasting old tunes. Moreover\, after honing his skill with a variety of bands\, he has emerged as one of his genre’s finest interpreters. \n

Known for mixing mirth with the macabre\, his music is a vast collection of fun songs about frightful topics. Perhaps that is why he has become such a fan favorite around Halloween\, a time of year where his sizable audience grows substantially and his dark ditties appear on everyone’s Halloween playlists. Walk through a Spirit Halloween and you’re bound to hear a few of his songs\, like Brains! Or Land of the Dead from the Cartoon Network show The Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy.\n \nMany know him for his songs from the viral animated videos of Daria Cohen’s Vampairseries (The Night\, Land of the Dead\, Zombie Prostitute\, Stuck with You\, Raised by Bats and Chupando) that have a combined 80 million views on Youtube. That IP is presently being developed into an animated series with Aurelio Voltaire as executive producer as well as voicing the main character of Duke.\n\n \n\nOver his thirty year career\, Aurelio Voltaire has released 14 full-length studio albums. \n \nHis latest release is a Summerween album of spooky surf\, ska\, and rockabilly songs called Summerween Surf. It features collaborations with spooky surf legends Los Straitjackets\, Messer Chups\, Satan’s Pilgrims\, Gothic horror punks Calabrese and more!\n \nWhen not touring or recording\, Aurelio Voltaire can be seen in his informative and hilarious Youtube series\, Gothic Homemaking. Like a young Vincent Price taking over for Martha Stewart\, he demonstrates how to turn a boring home into a Gothic lair with the help of his desiccated co-host\, Orville Deadenbacher and a bunch of other recurring monster characters.\n \nThe New York Times did a feature on Aurelio Voltaire and the Gothic Homemaking show calling him\, “The Martha Stewart of Macabre Homemakers” and “a lifestyle guru to people who embrace spookiness in all seasons.” The popularity of the show also lead to a book deal with Quarto Books/Epic Ink producing Aurelio Voltaire’s book\, Gothic Life- The Essential Guide to Macabre Style.\nThe Gothic Homemaking show can be seen at: https://www.youtube.com/thelairofvoltaire\n \nAurelio Voltaire has also just completed his first horror feature film\, The Demonatrix. In his directorial debut in which Voltaire also stars\, a priest comes to the aid of a dominatrix when she accidentally summons an incubus demon. The film stars Hannah Fireman (V/H/S\, Creepshow)\, Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) and Larry Fessenden (Jacob’s Wife\, Brooklyn 45). The incubus demon is played by Skinny Puppy frontman\, Nivek Ogre (Repo! the Genetic Opera\, The Devil’s Carnival) in a demon make up effects suit made by Norman Cabrera who worked on DelToro’s Hellboy\, Ghostbusters Afterlife\, Star Trek Beyond and Cabinet of Curiosities. The film will had its US premier in New York City on December of 2025 and is now on tour around the world via film festivals and horror conventions.—The Swongos are an instrumental Surf Band from the St. Croix River Valley on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border. Their music goes from soft\, sweet\, and dreamy to wacky\, wild and psychedelic.  In addition to Surf Music\, they have many styles of music such as Spy\, Exotica\, and Psychedelic Rock sprinkled in their sound.  The Swongos are influenced by traditional surf music like Dick Dale and the Ventures but also groups such as the Pixies\, Frank Zappa\, and Los Cubanos Postizos. \nThe Swongos have played shows with Messer Chups\, The Surfaris\, Eddie Angel (Los Straightjackets)\, Deke Dickerson\, Surfer Joe\, Tony Andreason (The Trashmen)\, The Phantom Surfers\, Los Bitchos\,  Los Yesterdays\, The Intoxicators\, The Volcanos\, Intoxicats\, Surf Zombies\, 13 Tikis\, Trailer Trash\, Black Widows\, Turn Turn Turn\, Gully Boys\, and many more.\n\n\n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Forming in 2000\, the Chicago natives achieved nationwide attention with their first two label-backed records\, 2006’s Knuckles Up and 2007’s Jungle of the Midwest Sea. These releases built on a heavy dose of previously established regional notoriety\, helping the band gain steam early on.\n \n\nThe Killigans are a seven piece “folk-punk” band from Lincoln\, NE. The Killigans “sound” combines the diverse musicals tastes of the bands members; fusing Punk Rock\, Folk\, Country and Western\, Celtic\, European folk\, Americana\, and other types of music into an upbeat\, foot-stomping\, beer-raising party. Lyrically\, the songs range from classic storytelling to rebel songs to ballads to middle class anthems. The Killigans are a band who thrive on live performance and crowd interaction. Core members include Brad Hoffman and the Nebesniak brothers. \nFounded in the cold-ass Minnesota winter of 2017\, Loss Leader is the new project from three working-class dudes from Minneapolis\, MN; Tim Schumann (guitar/vocals)\, Andy Slater (drums)\, and Brandon Stein (bass). With deep roots in the Minneapolis and broader Midwest punk and indie scenes (former The Damn Choir\, Mpls Henrys\, Mad Dogs of Glory\, current The Jeffertons) Loss Leaders’ brand of earnest\, hard charging\, melodic midwest punk has earned them a dedicated and steadily growing fan base in Minneapolis and the region.  \nToilet Rats is a one-person punk experiment created by the elusive Tommy Ratz\, a sewer-dwelling\, VHS-fed character whose warped worldview feels like flipping TV channels in 1983. Drawing inspiration from discarded cassette tapes\, the music collides synth pop\, thrash metal\, and spaghetti western soundtracks into something chaotic and unhinged. In 2001\, the idea to form a Van Morrison tribute band was formed\, and Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band\, with Joe Lockton on keyboards and Vic Volarerunning the horn section. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002.\n \nMany musicians played with the band over the first few years\, and continue to do so today\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established: Dan Kowalke on guitar and backing vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota(keyboards\, backing vocals)\, Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka(trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare(sax\, flute) and Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano). \n\n \nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers along with Terry’s own originals\, which have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing large crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, New York’s Times Square\, and once opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people.\n

Year five of the festival celebrates the famed New Orleanian clarinetist and soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet. You’ll hear his music\, starting with the 1923 hit “Kansas City Man Blues” with Clarence Williams\, through the swinging 1940 quartet with Muggsy Spanier\, the spectacular fireworks of his jazz duels with Louis Armstrong\, all the way to the beautiful 1950s compositions recorded with French jazz orchestras\, which sold more records than the French pop stars of the day. \n \nPaired with this year’s festival is the exciting CD release of Les Oignons\, Southside Aces’ newest recording! Ten tracks of Sidney’s hits. All Bechet\, all day!\n \nDedication\nThis festival is dedicated to Dr. Henry Blackburn\, who opened all our eyes and ears to the amazing world of Sidney Bechet. \n\n \nSouthside Aces\nYour magnanimous Jazz Age Rumpus hosts\, Southside Aces\, are a Twin Cities institution. For over two decades they’ve brought to life the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton\, the Chicago joys of Louis Armstrong\, the evocative compositions of the young Duke Ellington\, on up to the barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall and the early rock and roll of Fats Domino. Their belief in the contemporary vitality of New Orleans music led to the 2022 release of their eighth album\, Minneapolis Bump\, containing fifteen originals in the style. 2026 will see the release of two more albums: Les Oignons\, the band’s spotlight on the music of Sidney Bechet\, and The Big Beat\, the album you most want to spin at your next New Orleans party. \n \n“By the end of the night\, it felt like the members of Southside Aces were longtime friends of my soul.”\n–From the blog girlattherockshows.com\n \nSidney & Muggsy\nSoprano saxophonist and clarinetist Sam Skavnak leads this quartet created exclusively for Jazz Age Rumpus to bring you the music of the Bechet Spanier Big Four. Those 1940 recordings showed Bechet in a new setting — working with just cornet and a hot club rhythm section of guitar and bass — to create an incredibly light but fiery swing. Taking on the role of cornetist Muggsy Spanier is Dan Eikmeier\, while guitar virtuoso\, Sam Miltich\, and his bassist father\, Matthew Miltich\, provide that propulsive hot club rhythm.\n \n“If you’re hearing this music for the first time\, keep those ears open wide — this is the real thing!”\n-Dan Morgenstern review of the original recordings\n \nThe Boat Note Five with special guest Sam Skavnak\nSince 2018\, The Boat Note Five has dedicated themselves to Louis Armstrong\, celebrating the genius and ebullience of the man who changed music forever. The name of the band is drawn from one of Louis’ many nicknames\, and their repertoire is taken from his nearly fifty-year recording career\, starting with the groundbreaking music he made in the 1920s. The band has three members from Southside Aces: Tony Balluff\, clarinet; Dan Eikmeier\, trumpet; and Dave Michael\, drums. Rounding out the quintet are Josh Granowski on string bass and Rick Carlson on piano. Special for Jazz Age Rumpus: soprano saxophonist Sam Skavnak joins the band to help recreate the epic Louis Armstrong/Sidney Bechet jazz battles.\n \n“Boxing had Ali and Frazier. Jazz had Armstrong and Bechet.”\n-Louis Armstrong biographer Ricky Riccardi\n \nTony Balluff\nFounder and director of Jazz Age Rumpus\, Tony is a clarinetist and composer focusing on early jazz. He received his higher education in traditional jazz from local legends\, The Hall Brothers Jazz Band\, including Charlie DeVore and Butch Thompson\, with a concentration on Sidney Bechet from Dr. Henry Blackburn. He leads many bands in his efforts to bring the Jazz Age into the 21st Century.\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
