The “Westies”\, as they soon became known\, started out as an intensely chaotic\, Stooge-y hard rock band\, but later evolved into a hard-to-define amalgam of indie\, rock\, roots\, punk\, and funk\, driven by a ferocious\, lusty energy that infected any audience they came into contact with at one legendary live show after another. The Westies have released 3 studio LPs along with a handful of singles and EPs over the years – and there are at least a few albums worth of material that got lost along the way – but their enduring legacy is a well-earned reputation as one of finest live bands to ever come out of the Land of 10\,000 Bands. \n \nComa Club from Minneapolis is Christy Costello (Monica LaPlante\, Pink Mink\, Butchers Union\, Von Bondies)\, Orion Treon (Extraterrestrials\, Monica LaPlante)\, Monica LaPlante (Extraterrestrials\, Christy Costello) and Austin Cecil (Extraterrestrials\, Monica LaPlante\, Christy Costello). You get four bands in one. Christy. Orion. Monica. Austin.\n\nEmerging from the wreckage of his childhood band The Pharmacy\, Scott Yoder arrived clad in a black cloak\, stomping to the beat of his own sparkling tambourine. Over the course of two LPs & half a dozen singles he has toured the world\, espousing a more personal distillation of his song craft. This glitter-folk balladeer\, adorned in mascara & bell bottoms invites you to sway to his entrancing charm. \n\n—Set Times:7pm doors\n8pm Scott Yoder (solo) \n8:45 Coma Club\n9:45 RWR\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Boiled In Lead w/ Ait Ait
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook AND LADDER THEATER \n\nDoors 7:00pm :: Music 7:30pm\n\n21+\n\nReserved Seats (Limited): $35\nGeneral Admission*: $20 ADV / $30 DOS\n\n\n COVID-19 Policies\n	\n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nBoiled In Lead\nw/ special guests Áit Ait \n\n\n \n\nBoiled In Lead is the longest-running Celtic punk band in America\, and an important part of the foundation of what became Minnesota punk rock. Reborn for the band’s 40th Anniversary\, core members Todd Menton and Drew Miller add drummer Mo Engel and violinist Haley Olson to the lineup\, moving forward with a wealth of new material\, as well as looking backward to reframe old tunes. \n\n \nBob Mould of Hüsker Dü was among those who praised the band’s first self-released LP (“Even the Fiddles Rock\,”) and the Hüskers invited the band to play an early show at Goofy’s Upper Deck. Today\, the band’s star is still on the wall at First Avenue.\n \nBoiled In Lead have been innovators in bridging traditional music from many cultures with the sound and attitude of a rock band. A Boiled In Lead concert combines darkly-tinged folk ballads and originals with instrumental dance music from Ireland and elsewhere. Winners of multiple Minnesota Music Awards\, the group has toured throughout the US and in Europe. \n \nEnthusiastic\, powerful\, technically brilliant\, playing a wealth of instruments with extreme dynamics\, Boiled In Lead routinely demolishes genres with its highly-identifiable sound.\n \n “…the prime purveyor of a style of Celtic music infused with punk-rock attitude\, developing over the years with a hard-driving swirl that combined Irish folk with heavy rock and elements of styles from all over the world. …one of the best bands Minnesota’s ever produced. …even without amplification\, Boiled In Lead can summon up furious punk-folk energy.”  The Onion\n—\nÁit Ait (Irish for “strange place” or “uncanny valley”) are an experimental folk duo focused on reinterpretations of traditional songs – dark and deep\, bright and sparkling; full of noise and life. Based in Minnesota\, Áit Ait (pronounced “ahh-tch eye-tch”) is Aja McCullough (song) and Patrick Maun(sound). The two set out to explore the living tradition that is Irish folk music – ever evolving and always changing\, a solid footing set in the past but looking towards the future.\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Their newest album\, This Road\, captures the energy that the Colorado-based band brings to live performances\, each song stretching out along a path filled with melodious meanderings and percussive pathways that dance around a central musical theme. With the tracks more or less recorded live in the studio\, the true spirit of their music is revealed\, one that reflects the musicians desire for their songs to live organically and for the flow of the band’s energy to be uninhibited; listening to the songs on This Road is like being in the front row at one of the band’s shows. \n \nTWINE is Will Effertz | Kevin Fowke | Scott Yonke | Kelly Cook\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Resonant Rogues & Steam Machine
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook AND LADDER THEATER \n\nDoors 7:30pm :: Music 8:00pm \n\n21+\n\nGA: $15 ADV / $20 DOS\n\n\n COVID-19 Policies\n	\n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Resonant Rogues & Steam Machine\n\n\n \n\n\nThe Resonant Rogues’ dark Appalachian folk paints a picture of their lives in the mountains of Western North Carolina and on the road. Anchored by the songwriting duo of Sparrow (banjo\, accordion) and Keith Josiah Smith (guitar)\, they’ve traveled the byways and highways of America and crossed the oceans with instruments in tow. From riding freight trains to building their own homestead\, the pair are no strangers to blazing unconventional trails. At once rooted and adventurous\, each song tells a story of real experiences\, friendships\, and challenges. The Rogues just wrapped up a record in Nashville with renowned producer Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes\, Hurray for the Riff Raff).\n“Their intense cohesion is so intertwined that it feels like they’re playing with one pair of hands.” –No Depression \n“Soaring\, haunting vocals” -Lonesome Highway—–\nSteam Machine is a midwest based bluegrass accompanied old time music project fronted by award winning in-demand Minneapolis fiddler AJ Srubas and Twin Cities old time music & dance instigator Rina Rossi on guitar. A specially curated shortlist of stellar musicians perform with the band on banjo and bass\, and when possible\, mandolin. While not purists\, Steam Machine does listen closely to the “old stuff” and strives to capture the essence of what makes these tunes and songs special\, as they hear it. The project continues to be an evolving vehicle for playing music they love and honoring the brilliance left behind by old time heroes like Lyman Enloe\, Cyril Stinnett and more. Originally formed in Minneapolis in 2017\, Steam Machine brought to the national stage a midwest influenced string band aesthetic that didn’t draw such hard lines between bluegrass and old time music. Smooth powerful fiddling\, driving three finger banjo\, front-of-the-beat rhythm backup combined into a  “suspiciously entertaining” sound. \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Their origins trace back to jazz classes at the University of Minnesota. They recorded their first EP Morsels in 2017 and have continually been performing\, recording\, and rehearsing since\, which has allowed for their sound to mature and evolve.  \n \n\n \n\nMcNasty Brass Band is a collection of Minneapolis/Saint Paul based horn players and percussionists that fuse the Minneapolis sound with the spirit of New Orleans. The outcome of this fusion is hard-hitting dance music and high-energy live shows. Each player works tirelessly outside McNasty Brass Band as a side-man\, some with national and international touring acts. \n \n\nPorky’s Groove Machine has been getting both funky and silly since the fall of 2011. While their costumes and sense of humor show their willingness to not take themselves too seriously\, their dedication to high-energy and high-entertainment performances is anything but laughable. With classic covers\, quirky originals\, and synchronized dance moves (for band and audience alike)\, their live shows are a delight for crowds of all ages. \n \n\n—–The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!\n \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Dale Watson (Solo)
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook AND LADDER THEATER \n\nDoors 7:00pm :: Music 7:30pm \n\n21+\n\nReserved Seats (Limited): $35\nGA*: $25 ADV / $30 DOS\n\n\n COVID-19 Policies\n	\n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nDale Watson (Solo)\nw/ guest Matt Hillyer (Eleven Hundred Springs)\n\n\n \n\nDale has flown the flag for classic honky-tonk for over three decades. He’s christened his brand of American roots “Ameripolitan” to differentiate it from current crop of Nashville-based pop country. The Alabama-born\, Texas-raised Watson may be the hardest working entertainer today and is rapidly approaching legendary status.   \nDubbed “the silver pompadoured\, baritone beltin’\, Lone Star beer drinkin’\, honky-tonk hellraiser” by The Austin Chronicle\, Watson sat in with Jimmy Kimmel’s house band as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC) from SXSW 2015. Watson’s profile has risen considerably via appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS)\, Austin City Limits and The Sun Sessions (PBS) and as a guest on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me. A veteran touring artist and consummate entertainer\, he is on the road more than 300 days a year.  \n“I’m one of Dale’s biggest fans”                             – Willie Nelson—About Matt HillyerWhen legendary honky-tonk band Eleven Hundred Springs played its final notes near the end of 2021\, it understandably felt like an ending to many of its loyal fans. Over the course of 23 years the group played countless shows around the world\, released over a dozen albums\, and had become the standard for what a swingin’ Texas country band should be. But for lead singer-songwriter Matt Hillyer\, the ending of his beloved band wasn’t the closing of his own musical road. \n\nThis is an exciting time for Hillyer\, and for longtime Eleven Hundred Springs fans. He’s already hitting the road with a busy touring schedule and his solo songs are hitting the right notes with fans everywhere. For Hillyer\, his present and future isn’t defined by his past. He’s more interested in bringing it all to the table.\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

From MTV to NPR\, his expansive body of work has enthralled audiences for over two decades. Critics from USA Today to Wired and NME have hailed Mallman as a musical force to be reckoned with\, as his music resonates globally. He’s also scored the music for countless film and television pieces.  \n \nOver the course of his career\, Mark Mallman’s signature style has earned him a place among the Midwest’s greatest indie-rockers.  With a stage show that seems yanked out of some punk vaudeville time machine\, Mallman has a reputation for wild rock antics that stretches through roadhouses across America. He was the first person to webcast a nonstop concert on wheels that travelled from coast to coast\, all in the back of a van. \n \nBack-of-the-class post-punks Stranger Gallery formed in the shadows and disintegration of 2020 for a series of outdoor shows. Veterans of the dark folk\, shoegaze\, and thrash scenes\, the band demonstrates equally broad emotional and sonic spectrums\, from twangy goth to blues punk\, with ballads\, sardonic litanies\, and nods to artists like Steve Earle and The Chameleons\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

In 2001 the idea to form a Van Morrison tribute band was formed\, and Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band – with Joe Loskota on keyboards and Vic Volare running the horn section. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002. \n\n \nMany musicians played with the band over the first few years\, and continue to do so today\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established: Dan Kowalke on guitar and backing vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota (keyboards\, backing vocals)\, Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare (sax\, flute) and Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano). \n\n \nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers along with Terry’s own originals\, which have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their Minneapolis gigs and drawing large crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, New York’s Times Square\, and once opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people. \n\n \nIn May of 2021\, the Belfast Cowboys released an expansive live from-the-studio album called This Magic Night\, proving again that it is indeed “a thoroughbred-class band” (Star Tribune) that has earned every accolade. \n \nAs an added treat for this pre-Halloween show\, the band will be performing Moondance\, the highly-acclaimed studio album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison\, in its entirety!\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Her song cycle “Transiton” explores the complexities of navigating transition and change\, particularly gender transition and finding one’s true self in a gendered world.\n \nKay Jay Olson is a Minneapolis\, MN based artist originally from Eau Claire\, WI. Openly genderqueer\, they are focused on bringing queer issues to light through music. Their music is an eclectic mix of indie alternative\, musical theatre\, with a shot of atmospheric choral and a bite of social justice.\n \n2/3 of local interstellar space-pop trio Betazoid\, Emily Kastrul (Sister Species) & Lisa Harrigan (Blue Tree Music Education) come together for musical storytelling\, puppetry and the occasional big mood.\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Their often fierce\, happy sound is more nitro than retro. And while the band has spread out around the globe — with different members putting down roots in Austin\, Pittsburgh\, West Virginia\, Arizona\, even Switzerland for a few years — they’ve always called the Twin Cities their spiritual home\, always regrouped for gigs and mini-tours\, and never seriously contemplated splitting up. \nFor the uninitiated\, the band made their recording debut in 1993\, with “The Stimulating Sound of The Vibro Champs” Never was an album title more apt! They have opened shows for their heroes\, Ronnie Dawson (R.I.P.) and El Vez. They’ve appeared as the house band on Comedy Central’s nationally-broadcast series\, “Let’s Bowl.” They’ve recorded with Jim Sundquist\, of the legendary Fendermen. They’ve been caught on video by pioneering rock filmmaker\, Chuck Statler. And the combo starred in a brief\, very cool flick simply called\, “The Vibro Champs Documentary” — check it out on YouTube. What highlights will their fourth decade bring? Stay tuned\, folks. \nThe Sex Rays Retro Rocknroll from Minneapolis. Touring and releasing original music since 2009\, they’ve played everywhere from Rockaway Beach to Clarksdale. Featuring Joe Hastings\, Joe Holland\, Ben Crunk\, Ben Bachman. \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
