Come spend a summer evening with the Twin Cities second best musical tribute to Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra! \nELnO has a fever! And the only prescription is\, yep\, you guessed it…MORE COWBELL! But wait\, ELnO only has five cowbells. Where do you go from there? BRING YOUR OWN COWBELL night! That’s where! \n\nFor only the second time in ELnO’s rich history\, we’re actually doing it! BYOC made its maiden voyage several years ago in the old Lee’s days and everything went exactly as planned. Well\, OK. In truth\, it was a bit of a sh*t show. But it sure was fun! And pretty hilarious! The rules are simple: \n\n1.       Bring a cowbell. Preferably one meant for percussive use and not for hanging around a cow’s neck. But bring whatever you got.\n2.       Play on the downbeats. No salsa beats\, Tito Puente.\n3.       Don’t play cowbell on Telephone Line. Or any ballad for that matter. Just watch Jeff Lynne #1 for guidance. \n\nIt’s that easy! We’ve cooked up a particularly cowbell-centric set full of all the Electric Light Orchestra bangers as well as a few other cowbell classics. There might even be a special cowbell intense medley specially prepared just for this event! \n\nOf course\, you don’t HAVE to bring a cowbell. But it would be a lot cooler if you did! So\, break out your fanciest pair of jorts and join us Under the Canopy at The Hook and Ladder Theater for this twice in a lifetime event! Ya gotta have more cowbell!\n\n\n—–\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Turn\, Turn\, Turn / The Scarlett Goodbye

To create their distinctive sound\, the band “turns” to the distant past of early American recorded music\, “turns” again to that renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s\, and finally “turns” again to the present looking forward.  Even though Turn Turn Turn was born as a cover band\, the group’s original material – sweetheart alt-country folk-pop – quickly stole the spotlight.\n \nTurn Turn Turn’s Laurel Canyon meets 70’s-Nashville-cosmic soul vibe is layered with three-part harmonies that stitch the band’s musical tapestry together. Members Adam Levy (guitars\, vocals)\, Savannah Smith (guitar\, vocals) and Barb Brynstad (bass\, vocals) are all mainstays of the Minnesota music scene and together craft an infectious\, pop-infused Americana. They each have a distinct voice\, and the combination – a “fourth voice” – is greater than the sum of its parts.\n\nAdam Levy is a veteran of the Minnesota rock scene\, best known for leading up the alt-rock band The Honeydogs. As a prolific songwriter and producer\, he has worked across many genres and performed worldwide. Besides writing\, recording\, and performing music\, Adam is a social activist and educator\, teaching high school students social studies and songwriting.\n \nSavannah Smith has worked with such acts as Trampled by Turtles\, William Elliot Whitmore and Laura Stevenson. In 2019\, Savannah released her debut full-length album\, Leo. The follow-up to her EP Leaving Eau Claire\, it was written in a house built by her great-grandfather and was recorded and produced Minneapolis’ Brett Bullion (Low\, Halloween Alaska\, Bad Bad Hats).\n \nBarb Brynstad is an in-demand musician with decades-long roots in the Twin Cities music community. As a singer\, bassist and guitarist\, she has performed with a variety of musicians\, including Chastity Brown\, Tina Schlieske\, and the late-great Willie Murphy. She has also performed with comedian Lizz Winstead (The Daily Show) and contributes her musical talents to a variety of theater and dance projects.\n \n\n \n\nThe Scarlet Goodbye\, labelled “the most unlikely mash-up in Minnesota Music History”\, is the creative combination of Daniel Murphy and Jeff Arundel.\n \nDaniel D. Murphy was a critical element in the formation of two favorite bands\, Soul Asylum and Golden Smog\, sharing the stage with fellow hitmakers Dave Pirner\, Gary Louris\, and Jeff Tweedy.  After a career at the top\, including the GRAMMY for “Runaway Train” and sharing the biggest stages around the world\, Danny decided he was ready to leave the road\, and\, in 2012\, stepped aside.  \n\nA chance meeting at a 2019 holiday party with Minnesota yacht-rocker Jeff Arundel was the bait. Arundel had released 8 records of original songs\, toured extensively\, and was also active as a producer of various artists including Bryan White\, Keri Noble\, Billy McLaughlin\, and Adrianne Lenker. And\, the most unlikely mash-up in Minnesota music history was formed and off to the races.\n \nWith the first collaboration\, “Paris”\, they realized that they were onto something\, as Murphy shoved Arundel into a swagger\, and Arundel tip-toed Murphy onto revealing some vulnerabilities. Meeting in an attic studio during the Pandemic\, Murphy and Arundel fashioned a collection of songs that producer John Fields\, who was brought in to mix the record\, calls “both timeless and unique\, part Rolling Stones and part Townes Van Zandt”.\n \nIn 2022\, The Scarlet Goodbye released three singles and a video to critical acclaim\, and has performed on stages large and small\, bracing for the 2023 release of their full-length record “Hope’s Eternal”\, on Ingrooves/Universal\, via Nashville’s The Label Group.\n \n \n\n—–The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show! \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Their origins trace back to jazz classes at the University of Minnesota. They recorded their first EP Morsels in 2017 and have continually been performing\, recording\, and rehearsing since\, which has allowed for their sound to mature and evolve.  \n \n\n \n\nMcNasty Brass Band is a collection of Minneapolis/Saint Paul based horn players and percussionists that fuse the Minneapolis sound with the spirit of New Orleans. The outcome of this fusion is hard-hitting dance music and high-energy live shows. Each player works tirelessly outside McNasty Brass Band as a side-man\, some with national and international touring acts. \n \n\nPorky’s Groove Machine has been getting both funky and silly since the fall of 2011. While their costumes and sense of humor show their willingness to not take themselves too seriously\, their dedication to high-energy and high-entertainment performances is anything but laughable. With classic covers\, quirky originals\, and synchronized dance moves (for band and audience alike)\, their live shows are a delight for crowds of all ages. \n \n\n—–The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!\n \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Buckner and BiG HOMiE\, shrimp olympics\, & America y Los Sentimientos\n  \nOur friends at KFAI Community Radio (90.3FM) turn 46 this year and we’re helping them celebrate by throwing a free party. The station went on the air in 1978 with studios located in Walker Church and has been the voice of the community ever since.\nKFAI has curated an entertaining evening of music and fun for their birthday bash. The entire concert is being audio and video recorded. Simply sign up for your free tickets.\nL.A. Buckner is a performing musician\, teaching artist\, and producer from the Northside of Minneapolis. He holds a master’s degree in Percussion Performance from McNally Smith College of Music. Currently\, LA serves as co-host for the two-time Webby award-winning PBS music education YouTube series Sound Field.  In August 2020\, LA took iTunes by storm with the release of his project BiG HOMiE\, which reached the #1 Jazz position within 24 hours of its release. \nGet ready to experience a historic blend of jazz\, Gospel\, hip hop and avant-funk. Buckner’s compositions soar and sway\, blurring the line between Sunday church service and face-melting jam sessions. His artistry is full of energy\, excitement\, and culture.\n \nShrimp Olympics is the home recording project of Austin Lombardo. On stage\, he is backed by a four-piece live band. The music of Shrimp Olympics follows in the tradition of home-taping heroes like R Stevie Moore and Ween\, with heavy jazz\, country\, and psychedelic pop elements. This is easily one of the tightest bands in the Twin Cities today. \n \nAmerica y Los Sentimientos is a collective of musical storytellers weaving tales of passion\, joy\, and the universal human experience. Their bilingual repertoire spans the spectrum of pop\, rock\, and cumbia. With a wide range of musical and cultural influences from members from Mexico\, El Salvador\, Wisconsin\, and Texas\, they create an energetic fusion that leaves an indelible mark on the ears and hearts of their listeners. \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

This rockin’ quartet is considered one of the torch bearers of American roots music.\n \nSince forming in 1988 in Southern California\, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys have become one of the world’s most beloved Americana/Roots acts\, drawing from the deep musical waters that flow just beneath the surface of Rock & Roll’s fertile soil. A childhood passion for Country\, Doo-Wop\, and Rhythm & Blues 45s led Sandy (born Robert Williams) to pursue a singing career as a teenager\, beginning a life in music that continues decades later. \n \nAnd as his personal record collection continues to grow (75\,000 and counting)\, so does the depth of the musical influences that stream through his songwriting and singing style. A critically acclaimed tribute to Tex-Mex hero Freddy Fender\, released at the beginning of the 2020 lockdown\, points the way forward for Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys as they continue on a path of musical growth. After nearly 35 years on the road\, and more than two dozen releases to their credit\, they remain key figures on the ever-changing Americana circuit\, both on record and in live appearances.\n \n \n\nKinda Fonda Wanda is a high-octane\, rock ‘n’ roll\, honky-tonk experience inspired by the “Queen of Rockabilly” Wanda Jackson. The band features Amanda White\, a vocal powerhouse and compelling band leader. Minneapolis Star-Tribune said: “Amanda White has a voice that is glorious and a heart full of passion for Wanda Jackson. And\, Alan Subola is beyond words on guitar.”\n \nPrior to the outdoor music event\, Miss Shannon of “Miss Shannon’s Sock Hop” will be giving free swing dance lessons to get you ready for Big Sandy!\n \n\n\n\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2024. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests. This co-bill presents 3 sets of music taking us past the outdoor curfew and into the night… just the way they like to do it in the Crescent City. We will open up the evening Under The Canopy with an intimate solo performance from John Papa Gros\, followed by the Caribbean combos\, soul\, funk & blues of Paul Cebar and Tomorrow Sound (Milwaukee). Then we close the night indoors with a John Papa Gros’ full band performance for that funky Big Easy dance party! \n6pm – Doors7pm – John ‘Papa’ Gros (Solo) – Under The Canopy8pm – Paul Cebar and Tomorrow Sound – Under The Canopy9:30pm – John ‘Papa’ Gros (Full Band) – Inside Theater \n—\nNew Orleans has its fair share of musical ambassadors\, but few are more rooted in the cracked sidewalks and popping speakers of the Crescent City than John “Papa” Gros. Born and raised in the city\, Gros melds funk\, rock\, jazz\, and blues to deliver a sound that is both innovative and unmistakably New Orleans. \n \n\nIn keeping with the energy and spirit the Big Easy is known for\, Gros is a consummate live performer. His infectious band shows have been the highlight of festivals and venues across the U.S. and Europe\, showcasing versatile musicianship\, relentless grooves\, and eclectic songcraft of the highest order. Drawing on the full breadth and depth of his extensive catalog\, Gros’ live performance marries style with substance\, bringing that unique\, can’t-put-your-finger-on-it magic of New Orleans and infusing the audience with a joyous energy few artists can match. \n\n“John “Papa” Gros is a bedrock New Orleans artist\, a keyboardist\, singer and songwriter who draws on funk\, rhythm & blues and Americana songcraft; he also knows his way around the Mardi Gras music repertoire about as well as anyone.” – Keith Spera The New Orleans Advocate\n——————– \nPaul Cebar Tomorrow Sound bring forth a funky\, lyrically charged performance that sits comfortably with soulful sounds the world over. Intricate but free-swinging\, explosive yet intimate\, fresh and green as grass. Taking cues from the dance bands of western Louisiana (and his native Midwest)\, the streets (and 45’s) of New Orleans\, touring African and Caribbean combos and the soul\, funk & blues of his youth coupled with early\, teeth-cutting experience in the verbal hotbeds of  the coffeehouse scene\, Paul Cebar is a masterful synthesist of rhythmic culture. \n“I’ve been a fan of Paul’s for a long time. He and his band play great funky\, original music\, drawing from a wide range of styles I love. We love touring with them and his radio show is awesome.” -BONNIE RAITT\n\n\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2024. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests. Never content to allow himself to be confined to any particular category\, he embarked on a solo career that’s yielded many critically-acclaimed albums and consist kudos for his exceptional instrumental prowess\, his searing vocals\, and live performances that have dazzled audiences from coast to coast.  \n\n \nIt’s little wonder that Miami’s New Times lauded him as South Florida’s “Best Blues Guitarist” or that USA Today was inspired to remark “It’s a revelation to discover the thrilling retro-electric blues from this astonishing young guitarist.” M Music & Musicians once noted\, “His back-to-basics approach follows in the footsteps of those who fostered the blues in the Mississippi Delta and the smoky late-night haunts of Chicago.”  \n\n \n“It may be a bit premature to crown Albert Castiglia America’s newest King of the Blues\, but there’s little doubt that he at least deserves the title of heir apparent.”— Miami New Times\n \nIf the last few years are any indication\, that comment from the Miami New Times is certainly the case. In 2020\, he won a Blues Music Award “Blues Album of the Year” – in 2023\, he won both “Blues Rock Artist of the Year” and “Blues Rock Album of the Year.” \nCastiglia has never allowed himself to be confined to a musical genre and AllMusic said his style“combines hardcore blues with soul\, rock\, and country flavors for a sound that will appeal to rockers and purists alike.”\n \n \n\nMato Nanji\, longtime front man of Native American band Indigenous\, improves his craft with each record. His playing and singing have never been better as he pushes himself to new personal bests.  The group’s music is motivated not only by blues and rock greats such as Jimi Hendrix\, Carlos Santana\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, and B.B. King\, but also by the social issues and cultural bonds of the Mato’s Nakota roots.   \n\n \nThey have won Native American Music Awards for “Blues Recordings of the Year” as well as “Artists of the Year” honors. Indigenous’ sophomore release\, Circle\, was produced and arranged by Stevie Ray Vaughan’s longtime friend and collaborator\, the late Doyle Bramhall\, Sr. \n \nBorn and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota\, front man Mato dedicates his latest release Time Is Coming to the indigenous youth and all young people on the indigenous reservations.\n \nIn addition to his Indigenous ‘day job’\, Mato Nanji has been a member of the critically acclaimed Experience Hendrix Tour since 2002.  Playing alongside original Jimi Hendrix band members Billy Cox and the late Mitch Mitchell\, the tour roster includes some of today’s blues greats including Jonny Lang\, Kenny Wayne Shepherd\, Eric Johnson\, Dweezil Zappa\, Doyle Bramhall II\, and Robert Randolph. \n \nMato and fellow EHT tour mates  David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) collaborated on the hard-driving\, psychedelic blues-infused 3 Skulls and the Truth disc.  The album’s no-holds barred setting is the ideal foundation for the three veteran axemen to simply ‘let it fly’.\n \n \n\n\n\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2024. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests. A thoughtful\, clever lyricist with a tender voice\, the Minneapolis-based troubadour crafts songs that are catchy and relatable\, and span the emotional gamut from poignancy to whimsy. jeremy is one of those rare artists who can break your heart one minute\, and then put those fragile pieces back together again the next. \n“…he’s a pop genius\, with creative ambition to match his songs’ considerable charm” – NPR \n“…a Minnesota music hero” —Star Tribune \nAnna Graves is refreshed\, both personally and professionally\, after returning to her family’s farm in rural Southern Minnesota\, outside Minneapolis. Her new music\, including her single “Made to Love Someone\,” features simple production that puts her vulnerable\, ripped-from-her-life lyrics at the forefront. Love is the overarching theme on the album she’s working on for Island Records – not only romantic love\, but also\, and perhaps more importantly\, self-love – and she’s not afraid to mine her own experiences for inspiration\, nor to be extremely forthcoming with the details. “The best that I can do\,” Graves says\, “is just write something that’s completely true to me. How else are people gonna relate to something?” \nAnna Graves is also an American voice actress best known for her voice-over work on multiple video games and commercials\, along with her work on the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. \n\n\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2024. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests. You should come and hear them. And you’re right\, it’s not an orchestra. More like a banjo-harp-gentle-rockin-happy machine. They don’t know what to call it\, but they want everyone to know about it. The music has a lot of light in it. They try to play beautiful songs from all eras. Plus a ton of Matt’s own songs dating from the beginning of his songwriting quest right up to the present. Quillan Roe of The Roe Family Singers\, Matt Wilson\, Jacques Wait who touches all music in Minneapolis\, and harpist Phala Tracy.\n \nChristy Costello is a mover and a shaker in the Twin Cities Music Scene. Her first-rate songwriting has been showcased in previous bands like Pink Mink and Ouija Radio\, as well as her raw and unforgettable stage performances in Monica LaPlante\, Butchers Union\, The Von Bondies\, and Extraterrestrials. This is Christy’s turn to step to the front. Christy’s current lineup includes Monica LaPlante (bass)\, Orion Treon (guitar/synth)\, Austin Cecil (drums)\, and Matt Pahl (sax/auxiliary instrumentation).\n\n\n\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2024. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests. Thursday\, July 11 is presented as a partially seated listening show environment with Friday\, July 12 being a general admission full band performance. \n \n\nMidwestern artist Lissie is a multi-talented tour de force who released her latest Americana-tinged indie folk album “Carving Canyons”. Ahead of the release she has unveiled the first song two songs “Flowers” and “Night Moves”. Debuted by FLOOD Magazine\, the haunting sun-soaked song Night Moves channels Fleetwood Mac grandeur as it explores sensory memory and considering multiple realities vs one’s own point of view when navigating heartbreak. \n“Carving Canyons” is about looking within while dealing with the uncertainty of the future—finding hope in personal and worldly adversity\, no matter what the forecast might say. Inspired by her incredible intergenerational female friend group and the nature that surrounded her\, Lissie traveled to Nashville and co-wrote much of the album with a majority of female-identifying songwriters—including Bre Kennedy\, Madi Diaz\, Morgan Nagler\, Natalie Hemby\, Kate York\, and Sarah Buxton—who also contribute additional vocals throughout the album. \n \n“Carving Canyons” is Lissie’s first full-length album since her UK Top 10 album “Castles” in 2018. In 2010\, her 1st full length album “Catching A Tiger” unassumingly established Lissie as a global voice. Lissie has recently appeared in TV shows Twin Peaks and Loudermilk as well as co-owns the music genre themed popcorn company Otts Pops Indie Pop and is involved with land conservation. \n———Tyler RamseyAt the core of any great singer-songwriter lies this inherent trait of stage presence\, one where an entire room\, no matter the size\, is pulled in by this lyrical tractor beam — all eyes\, emotions and energies aimed in one direction at a single voice. For Tyler Ramsey\, it’s being able to honestly connect with the listener. Albeit a genuinely humble soul\, don’t let Ramsey fool you. When it comes to the modern-day singer-songwriter\, he remains a bastion of musical talent and lyrical aptitude — a melodic voice-of-reason and safe haven amid a 21st century world seemingly gone mad. The former lead guitarist of Band of Horses\, Ramsey has also released four acclaimed solo albums\, including “For The Morning” in 2019. Ramsey’s latest album “New Lost Ages” was captured at the legendary Avast! Recording Co. in Seattle\, Washington\, by storied producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes\, Father John Misty\, The Shins\, Built to Spill). The 10-song LP is an ongoing sonic quest — meticulously wandering across the musical landscape\, this undulating tone of indie\, rock and folk stylings.\n=========\n\n\nDetails of Second Show: \nLISSIE (Full Band) with guest LAAMAR (Duo)\nFriday\, July 12\n\nUnder The Canopy at The Hook and Ladder Theater“An Urban Outdoor Summer Concert Series”\nDoors 6:00pm :: Music 7:00pm :: 21+\nVIP Meet & Greet: $107 (3 Song Acoustic Performance in Zen Arcade)\nGA: $32 ADV / $38 DOS\n\n\n TICKETS AND INFO\n	\n\n\n\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2024. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests.
