Now\, he’s uniting his passion for music and service to support another vital organization: Open Arms of Minnesota. \n\n \nOpen Arms provides free\, nutritious meals to people living with life-threatening illnesses like HIV/AIDS and cancer. After a devastating loss of state and federal funding\, the organization is now at risk—forcing some clients to go without food. Matt’s firsthand experience as a former Open Arms intern and community member inspired him to act. \n\n \nOn Saturday\, July 12\, Matt is organizing a powerful night of music at The Hook and Ladder Theater. Featuring beloved local bands and artists\, this benefit concert will raise funds to help Open Arms continue delivering life-saving meals. \n \nJoin us for an unforgettable evening where music meets mission—and help nourish our neighbors in need.

This rockin’ quartet is considered one of the torch bearers of American roots music. \n \nSince forming in 1988 in Southern California\, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys have become one of the world’s most beloved Americana/Roots acts\, drawing from the deep musical waters that flow just beneath the surface of Rock & Roll’s fertile soil. A childhood passion for Country\, Doo-Wop\, and Rhythm & Blues 45s led Sandy (born Robert Williams) to pursue a singing career as a teenager\, beginning a life in music that continues decades later. \n \nAnd as his personal record collection continues to grow (75\,000 and counting)\, so does the depth of the musical influences that stream through his songwriting and singing style. A critically acclaimed tribute to Tex-Mex hero Freddy Fender\, released at the beginning of the 2020 lockdown\, points the way forward for Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys as they continue on a path of musical growth. After nearly 35 years on the road\, and more than two dozen releases to their credit\, they remain key figures on the ever-changing Americana circuit\, both on record and in live appearances.\n \n\nMinneapolis based band\, Lena & The LoveKills\, exist in a musical genre all their own. The band fuses elements of Rockabilly\, Danceable Swing\, Jump Blues and R&B into an eclectic mix of good music and fun times that can only rightfully be described as “Swingabilly.” Their stage presence\, retro look\, and often quirky sense of humor delights listeners and gets folks onto the dance floor.

Get your tickets and don’t forget your dancing shoes!—Igor Yuzov was born in Germany\, raised in Ukraine and studied in Russia. He grew up in the former Soviet Union\, where folk music was the norm and rock’n’roll was illegal. A rebellious streak\, led him to seek out the forbidden music. As soon as it became possible\, Igor left Russia for America with his “Folk’n’Roll” band Limpopo\, and was personally greeted by Ronald Reagan. In 1993\, Limpopo won Ed McMahon’s Star Search and their popularity began to blossom. In 1995\, Igor dreamed that Elvis Presley came to him and told him to start playing rock’n’roll. Igor and his Russian friends became Red Elvises and gave street performances on Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade. As their crowds grew larger\, the City of Santa Monica ordered them to discontinue their street performances. Evolving over the years\, Igor’s music has been labeled “Siberian Surf Rock” which contains humorous lyrics and grooves that forces his audience to dance. Over the past 20 years\, Red Elvises have constantly toured all over the world with occasional breaks to record new music and to participate in film and television projects. \n\n \nAs an independent band\, Red Elvises have produced 12 studio albums\, two live albums\, a live concert DVD\, and a Greatest Hits compilation. Some of their most notable film contributions include music and or performances in “Six String Samurai”\, “Mail Order Bride”\, “Armageddon”\, “Skippy”\,  “Melrose Place”\, “Fastlane”\, “Penn and Teller’s Sin City Extravaganza”\, “VH-1 Behind the Music”\, and “MTV”. Red Elvises have performed for large festivals\, private parties\, and played on massive stages such as 2005’s Live 8 Benefit Concert. No matter where they perform\, Igor & Red Elvises always bring the party with them.\n \nBlack Widows are a surf-punk-psyche band from Minneapolis\, Mn\, U.S. They serve up wild surf guitar\, slick bass grooves\, mean beats\, & riot grrrl vox. BW have toured overseas & nationally from Spain to NYC & LA playing bills and festivals w/ major acts like Bombino\, Dale Watson\, L.A. Witch\, The Trashmen\, Shonen Knife\, Olivia Jean\, The Coathangers\, Death Valley Girls\, Supersuckers\, Agent Orange\, The Surfaris\, Man or Astro-Man\, Messer Chups\, The Surfrajettes\, John Waters\, & more. BW’s ‘Swamp Rock City’ EP is out now on vinyl and they’re currently working on a full length album to be released this year. Follow BW at @blackwidowsrocks for 2025 tour dates and releases.

In the gospel church of her childhood\, she played saxophone and drums and found her singing voice and a passion for music. \n \nChastity’s been featured on NPR’s Favorite Sessions\, CMT\, American Songwriter\, the London Times\, Paste Magazine and others. Chastity has toured the U.S. and abroad\, appearing on the U.K.’s Later…with Jools Holland.\n \nLike so many artists who endured the uncertainty of the 2020 lockdown\, Chastity’s instinct was to turn inward\, at first out of self-preservation\, and then because the new songs kept coming and coming. Since finishing her last album\, 2017’s Silhouette Of Sirens\, she estimates she’s written nearly 100 new songs\, ten of which found their way onto her latest\, 2022’s Sing To The Walls.\n \nBetween writing sessions she’s been vibing to chilled-out\, forward-thinking artists like Leon Bridges\, H.E.R.\, SZA\, and Daniel Caesar\, taking their cue to expand beyond genre and her folk/roots history to encompass her appreciation of all Black American musical art forms. “I also want to poke at what the blues is\,” Chastity reflects. “It has a lot of stereotypes like it’s mostly only played by blue-eyed white guys now. But what about Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey? I feel so closely connected\, in a pure\, undeviating lineage\, to the heritage of being a Black\, queer blues woman. I want to share this music with them\, to say that I’ve listened\, and I’ve done something new.”\n—\n\nAnna Devine is a singer-songwriter based in the Twin Cities. You may have seen her singing with local indie groups Aiden Intro and Chutes. In 2024\, Anna moved to center stage to front her solo project\, playing sold-out rooms in the Twin Cities area.\nInspired by indie folk musicians such as Adrianne Lenker\, Slow Pulp and Alex G\, Anna released her debut EP\, “Seeing the Trees for the Leaves” in April 2025. \n \n“Her first solo release\, “Year’s End\,” captures the conflicting feelings of starting anew after the holiday fanfare. Devine’s gentle\, sensitive musical touch is reminiscent of alternative folk artists like Big Thief and Aldous Harding.” —Diane Miller\, The Current (MPR)\n \n“Anna Devine’s songs carry stories of heartache and fortitude across her new EP\, Seeing the Trees for the Leaves. With subtle and gentle delivery\, Devine knows how to sculpt atmosphere on the opening song “This Time.” The minimal sound design builds with swells of warm tones and gently strummed guitar\, evolving into a beautiful tune.” —Mpls.St.Paul Magazine\n\n\n \n\nThank you to our sponsors\, partners\, & neighbors: \nSummit Brewing • DuNord Social Spirits • RKR Ganja Beverages • Nobool Presents • KFAI 90.3FM • Mpls.St.Paul Magazine • The Zen Arcade • Longfellow Rising • Lake Street Council • Minnesota State Arts Board • Moon Palace Books • Arbeiter Brewing\n\n \nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2025. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.\n \nThe Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2025 season for our guests. All killer no filler. RuDeGiRL is a fiery female tribute to The Clash. Garage rockers Mary Strand & The Garage celebrate the release of her new album I Don’t Need Your Permission (Hygh Tension Records (TLG)/Virgin Music Group). Neil Young’s Vapor Records alumni The Customers return with a vengeance of their own. And The Silent Treatment delivers fast\, loud punk sounds as subtle as a car accident.—Mary Strand & The Garage\nRising garage rocker Mary Strand’s second album\, I Don’t Need Your Permission\, explores themes of empowerment\, especially from a woman’s perspective. Mary’s music has been variously described as alternative rock\, punk\, post-punk\, power pop\, and/or plain old indie rock\, but her mix of sounds is no accident. Mary simply loves rock and roll. All of it.\n \nMary will be celebrating the release of her new album and her recent #1 worldwide RIA single “Least of All Her” (Hygh Tension Records (TLG)/Virgin Music Group) with her band The Garage\, featuring members of Soul Asylum\, The Melismatics\, Ultrabomb\, The Mood Swings\, and Outta Coentro.—The Customers are a rock band formed in Los Angeles\, CA in 1995 by Ryan Sexton. A demo of Sexton’s songs found its way onto the desk of Neil Young’s manager\, Elliot Roberts\, who was then in the process of launching Young’s fledgling label\, Vapor Records. Roberts enquired as to whether a band might be formed to support the songs\, and The Customers were born.\n \nAfter moving back to Minneapolis (Sexton’s hometown) in 2000\, The Customers released the five song EP Severybuddyappy which included the college-friendly “Until Now.” A bunch of years passed while Sexton pursued other interests\, but writing songs nevertheless. In 2022\, he teamed up with renowned Minneapolis producer\, Kevin Bowe\, to make the post-punk/Americana LP\, Sweet Fatality. The album features appearances by Daniel Murphy (Soul Asylum/The Scarlet Goodbye)\, Terrance J. Fisher (Run Westy Run)\, Ivan Julian (Richard Hell and the Voidoids)\, Patricia Lacy (Luther Vandross)\, and Minneapolis phenoms John Eller\, Terry Isachsen\, Peter Anderson\, Pat Frederick\, Ian Prince\, and Noah Levy.\n \nThe band is set to go back into the studio to record a new EP tentatively titled “Living Like Gods.” The record will be produced by Daniel Murphy (Soul Asylum/The Scarlet Goodbye).\n—The Silent Treatment\nGet ready to dive into the raw\, high energy punk rock of The Silent Treatment. It’s Minneapolis rock and roll at its finest writing music that draws from the seedy underbelly. And with a band full of scene vets that sustain full-throttle energy for some complicated fun\, it’s not to be missed. After playing numerous local venues and festivals\, they are taking their recklessly fun live show regionally and nationally.\n \nThe band recently released their first full-length album\, Suplex in 10! (2024). Recorded at The Terrarium Studio\, it features unapologetic provocative lyrics with a stripped-down sound and an intensity as subtle as a car crash.\n \nThe group has shared stages with Agent Orange\, Henry Cluney of Stiff Little Fingers\, International punk supergroup Ultrabomb (Greg Norton -Hüsker Dü\,  Finny McConnell -The Mahones\, and Jamie Oliver -UK Subs)\, Dion Lunadon of The D4\, The dB’s\, Venus DeMars and All the Pretty Horses\, and many more. They receive regular airplay on The Current 89.3 FM\, KFAI 90.3 FM\, KVSC 88.1 FM\, and WITR 89.7 FM and have been featured on Racket’s “10 Best Songs of 2024\,” with their track\, “Hulk Hogan is a Dick” as well as being featured on The Current’s Scouting Report.

DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n RSVP ON FACEBOOK\n	\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook and Ladder Theater \n\n\nDoors 7:00pm :: Music 8:00pm :: 21+\n\n\nGA: $22 Box Office / $25.05 Online / $27 Door\n\n\nBOX-OFFICE Tickets Are Available at The Hook & Ladder Box Office or The Zen Arcade (Open During Hours of Operation.) For More Information visit www.ZenArcadeTHC.com \n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nAurelio Voltaire \nw/ Stranger Gallery —–\n\n“What if Johnny Cash made folks songs for vampires?” The answer might very well describe the music of Aurelio Voltaire. \n\n \nOften described as a modern day renaissance man\, Voltaire is an accomplished singer/ performer\, author\, creator of films\, animation\, toys and home decor.  \n\n \nAs an internationally touring musician for nearly 30 years\, he is at the forefront of the Gothic and Dark Cabaret genres and has consistantly headlined some of the biggest horror\, sci-fi and comic book conventions. Known for mixing mirth with the macabre\, his music is a vast collection of fun songs about frightful topics. Perhaps that is why he has become such a fan favorite around Halloween\, a time of year where his sizable audience doubles its listeners and his dark ditties appear on everyone’s Halloween playlists. Walk through a Spirit Halloween and you’re bound to hear a few of his songs\, like Brains! Or Land of the Deadfrom the Cartoon Network show The Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy. \n\n \nMany know him for his songs from the viral animated videos of Daria Cohen’s Vampairseries (The Night\, Land of the Dead\, Zombie Prostitute\, Stuck with You\, Raised by Bats and Chupando) that have a combined 80 million views on Youtube.  \n\n \nOver his thirty year career\, Aurelio Voltaire has released 13th full-length studio albums. His most recent release\, an EP called\, The Last Halloween Party features It’s Always Wednesday (about that spooky Addams girl) as well as The Skeleton Dance which has an Oogie Boogie-like big band sound that recalls Voltaire’s earlier work for The Cartoon Network.  \n\n \nIn 2025\, Aurelio Voltaire is working on a Summerween album of spooky surf\, ska\, reggae and rockabilly songs and is planning a release of his greatest Halloween Hits for the fall.  \n\n \nWhen not touring or recording\, Aurelio Voltaire can be seen in his informative and hilarious Youtube series\, Gothic Homemaking. Like a young Vincent Price taking over for Martha Stewart\, he demonstrates how to turn a boring home into a Gothic lair with the help of his desiccated co-host\, Orville Deadenbacher and a bunch of other recurring monster characters. \n\n \nThe New York Times did a feature on Aurelio Voltaire and the Gothic Homemaking show calling him\, “The Martha Stewart of Macabre Homemakers” and “a lifestyle guru to people who embrace spookiness in all seasons.” The popularity of the show also lead to a book deal with Quarto Books/Epic Ink. Aurelio Voltaire’s book\, Gothic Life- The Essential Guide to Macabre Style hit bookstores everywhere on August 13th\, 2024. \n\n \nAurelio Voltaire has also just completed his first horror feature film\, The Demonatrix. In his directorial debut in which Voltaire also stars\, a priest comes to the aid of a dominatrix when she accidentally summons an incubus demon. The film stars Hannah Fireman (V/H/S)\, Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) and Larry Fessenden (Killers of the Flower Moon). The incubus demon is played by Skinny Puppy frontman\, Nivek Ogre (Repo\, the Genetic Opera\, The Devil’s Carnival) in a demon make up effects suit made by the same team that worked on DelToro’s Hellboy\, Ghostbusters Afterlife\, Star Trek Beyond and Cabinet of Curiosities. The film is expected to hit film festivals in the fall of 2025.

The Combo will be performing a FULL night of music from these two iconic funk artists. \nWorld renowned Dr. Mambo’s Combo has been performing weekly at Bunkers Music Bar & Grill since 1987 — one of the longest running weekly residencies anywhere in America. The band quickly became Prince’s favorite — playing soul\, rock\, and r&b music with unmatched passion and fire – and audiences have flocked to their weekly performances ever since. In addition to Prince\, many national touring artists often stop by to sit in with the band after their own show —including John Mayer\, Sheila E\, Questlove\, Stokley\, Larry Graham\, and Bonnie Raitt. \nDr. Mambo’s Combo’s ‘Let Me Have it All’ features a diverse collection of songs across the many eras and styles of these amazing trendsetting artists. Sly Stone rose to popularity with Woodstock era hits ‘Everyday People’ & ‘I Want to Take You Higher’\, and took a surprise turn in the early 70’s with the genre defining funk of ‘Family Affair’ and ‘If You Want Me to Stay’. \n\nRufus and Chaka Khan were one of the most popular and influential funk bands of the 1970s\, with four consecutive number-one R&B albums\, ten top 40 pop hits and five number-one R&B singles including ‘Tell Me Something Good’\, ‘Sweet Thing’ and ‘Ain’t Nobody’.\n \n\nThe current band lineup features Julius Collins and Margaret Cox on lead vocals\, Sonny Thompson on bass\, Brian Ziemniak on keys\, Geoff LeCrone on guitar and Peter Suttman on drums. Joining the band for this special performance are The Bangbang Horns (Peter Vircks & Riley Helgeson). \n\n\n\n \n\nThank you to our sponsors\, partners\, & neighbors: \nSummit Brewing • DuNord Social Spirits • RKR Ganja Beverages • Nobool Presents • KFAI 90.3FM • Mpls.St.Paul Magazine • The Zen Arcade • Longfellow Rising • Lake Street Council • Minnesota State Arts Board • Moon Palace Books • Arbeiter Brewing\n\n \nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2025. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.\n \nThe Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2025 season for our guests. (formerly Zippo Man) has since garnered a reputation for their live performances. Often considered “genre-fluid”\, the band is known for covering a vast sonic terrain throughout a set – and never without their suits\, boots\, and white Stetson.|\n\nModern Joey (Milwaukke\, WI) is a primarily jam-rock group that encompasses just about every rock subgenre into their original music\, alongside an eclectic mix of covers and a guaranteed good time. With endless inspirations\, Modern Joey strives to celebrate a universe of styles and genres. Giving everything that classic Modern Joey spin\, they aim to bring you a high energy show ripe with dancing\, headbanging\, stank-faces\, and the electric energy that will wake up your soul. \nHow does one describe Pullstring? Well… Basically Dad Rock. Hailing from Minneapolis\, Pullstring’s brand of nostalgic Alt Rock and Power Pop is reminiscent of the 90s and 2000s artists they grew up listening to\, such as Green Day and their hometown favorites\, The Replacements.

This may include but is not limited to: professional recording opportunities\, vinyl pressing\, transportation needs\, theft replacement or merch. \n\n\n \n\n\nGrant recipients will be determined by a revolving panel of respected Minnesota musicians.  One grant to be made in memory of Ed Ackerson and one in the name of Paul Engebretson.  Musicians helping musicians.\n\n\n=============\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Shackletons are the second  family band on the bill and are hosts for the day’s festivities. \n\n\n—\n\n\n\n\nScott Holt hails fro m Columbus\, TN and his guitar has taken him all over the world and to its most iconic venues. Beginning his career as Buddy Guy’s side man\, Holt spent many years touring and recording under his own name.  For the past three he has fronted the iconic blues rock band Foghat. Scott will be joined on stage by his friends The Shackletons and will host an evening ending jam session with festival participants. Scott Holt of Foghat.\n\n\n—\n\n\nThe Melismatics are the long t ime project of husband and wife team Ryan and Pony Smith (Soul Asylum/Mood Swings).  While much of their work has been featured on TV and film\, it’s as a live band that they truly shine. When this band plays\, other artists come to the show! \n\n\n—\n\n\nSleeping Jesus is the brain  child of indie rocker Nick Elstad. Hailing from Winona\, MN the band and name are synonymous with Midwest Music Fest. \n\n\n—\n\n\nOister Boy is about  as quintessential punk as Minnesota gets. It is what it is but it’s also\, dare we say? Nice. If punk should be anything\, it should be an unblinking reflection of where the band comes from. Oister Boy is us. \n\n\n—\n\n\nDevon Worley Band might be country . And it might be straight up rock and roll.  Doesn’t matter.  What matters is this is a road worn band that brings the heat. \n\n\n—\n\n\nLoki’s Folly. Speaking o f punk\, this is where it starts. Don’t let the ages fool you! This 3 piece sibling wrecking ball has been going since they were single digits.  Along the way\, they’ve been mentored by a Who’s Who of local heavyweight artists who saw something special. \n\n\n—\n\n\nYonder lays  claim to being one of the buzziest of the basement scene bands in the Twin Cities. They might claim to be a local band but they came together from one end of the state to the other\, each with some serious band pedigree. \n\n\n—\n\n\nProducts Band may call the mselves New-No Wave but most people simply know them as a guitar drenched rock band mixing cynicism and brains.

This electrifying event brings together some of the Twin Cities’ fiercest bands to rally community support for progressive champion Omar Fateh—a leader who’s been fighting for housing\, justice\, and working-class Minnesotans.\n —\nBrace yourself for a sonic uprising featuring:\nDad Bod\nGR3G\nKilled by Kiwis\nBeneath Green\nCalamity & The Owl\n —\nThis isn’t just a show—it’s a movement. Come mosh\, raise your voice\, and get energized to vote for real change. Let’s pack the venue\, build the momentum\, and make some noise for a future we believe in.\n—Dad Bod is a gazey dreamscape crafted by Callie Marino\, Wilson Zellar\, and Noah Topliff. The project emerged from Marino’s bedroom in 2019\, with confessional lyrics never intended to see the light of day. With the addition of guitarists Zellar and Topliff\, Dad Bod’s signature stabs of distortion and twinkly riffs grew to define their sound.\n—GR3G\, a 22-year-old independent artist hailing from the vibrant streets of South Side Chicago\, has emerged as a beacon of authenticity and creativity in the Minneapolis music scene. GR3G’s journey as an artist is deeply intertwined with his roots\, social justice advocacy\, and a profound passion for storytelling through music.—\nKilled by Kiwis is a rock band hailing from Minneapolis\, Minnesota. Taking inspirations from garage rock\, glam rock\, synthwave\, pop punk\, and psychedelia\, Killed by Kiwis forges a sound that frequently crosses genres and themes. Their music utilizes a hard-hitting rhythm section\, dazzling synths\, and soaring vocals to produce a powerful wall of sound. With songs that vary from hard rock headbangers to evocative ballads\, their shows are both energetic and dynamic.\n—Hailing from the vibrant musical landscape of Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, Beneath Greenemerges as a dynamic and eclectic 7-piece band\, weaving a tapestry of sounds that pays homage to the classic rock greats while adding their own unique twist. Influenced by the likes of Steely Dan\, Pink Floyd\, Chicago\, Billy Joel\, and Electric Light Orchestra\, Beneath Green ventures into unexplored musical territories\, blending genres seamlessly and captivating audiences with their distinctive sound.—\nBrother’s Jared and Joshua Killfoil hail from the Red River Valley of northeastern North Dakota. Their harmonies define the sound of bluegrass/alt-country upstarts Calamity & The Owl. Calamity’s debut EP The Hot Trash Sessions is a collection of inspiringly original songs that marks the inaugural release of Jokertown Records. The band continues to tear it up with their live shows around the Twin Cities and the Midwest.

Osborne lends its name from the unit Trapper was in at a Minnesota rehab facility and is also a nod to the songwriter’s muse Ozzy Osbourne\, who attended the same facility.\n \nChanneling Black Sabbath\, Suicide and Springsteen\, his newest record is wildly different than anything Trapper has done. Produced by pop polymath Mike Viola (Andrew Bird\, Dawes) and multi-instrumentalist Tyler Chester (Madison Cunningham\, Jackson Browne)\, Trapper feels like he’s found an honest voice in song and spirit through Osborne. \n \nAfter having spent the last decade performing countless live dates and sharing stages with such like-minded Americana mainstays as The Wallflowers\, The Jayhawks\, Frank Turner and Old 97’s\, Trapper will take to the road again with Osborne. “…Schoepp is ultimately a storyteller deeply rooted in folk music. His songs connect to the past\, yet breathe freshness into the present\, reflecting the themes of what it means to be human in a world made of narratives.” — No Depression\n \nRockers Wild Lyre have been described as a “Psych Americana Indie Rock and Roll Folk band from Minneapolis that is not a jam band but is def not NOT a jam band.”  \n\n\n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
