Tight horn and Rhythm section set the tone\, immediately pulling fans to engage.—–Mae Simpson “It’s impossible to stand still during a Mae Simpson Music set. Simpson’s raspy\, dynamic voice is larger than life — but not as large as her uncontainable energy that radiates from the stage.” – Colleen Cowie (Minneapolis Public Radio) \nGrowing up in South Carolina\, Mae Simpson remembers her mother wearing out the records of Tina Turner and Patsy Cline. You can hear their echo in the music of the Minneapolis-based artist. Turner can be felt in Simpson’s fiery soulful voice\, stage energy\, and rock and soul feel on songs like Tryna be Right and Why. The timeless lyricism of Cline finds its home in nostalgic ballads like Cap Guns and Monsters. \nThe band includes Jorgen Wadkins on guitar\, David Kellerman on bass\, drummer and background vocalist Aaron Silverstein\, and trumpeter Paul Pederson. In 2023 they released Chandelier & Bloom.——————–Hot Like Mars is Chicago’s funkiest\, most soulful rock band\, turning heads with their exhilarating live performances and consistently compelling studio releases. The dynamic quintet – Anthony Perry (Lead Vocals / Keys)\, Frank Minella (Guitar / Vocals)\, Patrick Walsh (Guitar)\, Lamontae Norwood (Bass / Vocals)\, and Wes Julien (Drums / Vocals)\, has earned regional acclaim in recent years\, delivering high-energy\, genre-bending live shows that leave audiences spellbound. Leading with exceptional song craft\, intrepid improvisation\, and world-class instrumentation\, the group’s uplifting presence has earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting bands on the circuit today. \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Imagine if a variety show was actually good! \n— \nFor seven years\, Tuck Woodstock has hosted the beloved trans podcast Gender Reveal. Now\, we dare to ask the question: What if instead of “interviews” and “guests” and “thoughtful analysis” on a “podcast\,” Gender Reveal was a series of high-concept games and visuals-heavy comedy bits presented by Tuck and his two most available friends? Expect comics (both kinds)\, historical personal ads\, lightly coerced transitioning\, and something called “Jeremiah AFAB Sweatpants.” No Gender Reveal knowledge is needed\, but being gay is encouraged. \nTuck Woodstock is the host of the podcast Gender Reveal and the co-editor of 2 Trans 2 Furious. mattie lubchansky is a cartoonist and illustrator\, and the author of Boys Weekend. Calvin Kasulke is the author of the novel Several People Are Typing. \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

The station went on the air in 1978 with studios located in Walker Church and has been the voice of our community ever since. For their birthday celebration\, they have curated an entertaining evening of music and fun. \n— \nKFAI’s MinneCulture presents Live from Minnesota: Turtle Island Voices Rising. Celebrating Minnesota American Indian Month with hosts Deanna StandingCloud and Trish Cook and performances by Tufawon and Tiana Spotted Thunder. \n— \nThe event is free and open to the public. Simply sign up for your free tickets! \n— \nTufawon (2 for 1) is a Dakota/Boricua singer\, songwriter\, producer\, and teaching artist from Minneapolis. His name represents his mixed identity\, and his music is an honest reflection of his life experiences\, personal struggles\, his hopes and dreams for the future\, spirituality\, connectedness to the land\, love\, and the realities of the world. Musically\, he creates a broad spectrum of styles including Hip Hop\, RnB\, Dancehall\, Reggaeton\, and Afrobeats. He has put his life on the line to protect the water and our planet thru protest and community organizing. Not only is he dedicated to making music at the highest quality\, he is an active youth worker\, teaching what he knows and setting the bar high for the next generation of songwriters. \n— \nTiana Spotted Thunder is a Lakota recording artist from Oglala\, South Dakota\, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She is a vocalist of many genres\, but specializes in singing traditional Lakota and indigenous music. She travels throughout North America to powwows as a backup singer for drum groups as well as performing solo for various audiences. Her vocal range reveals the pride of her identity as a Lakota woman. \n— \nDeanna StandingCloud is a mom\, playwright\, organizer\, artist\, community leader\, pow-wow emcee\, and advocate for Indigenous people. A member of the Red Lake Nation\, an Anishinaabe or Ojibwe tribe\, StandingCloud’s role as an emcee is just one aspect of a life that intertwines both tradition and modernity. She found her calling in weaving words and telling stories\, unlike the rest of her family who are more gifted in the visual arts. She studies Ojibwe\, the Anishinaabe language\, writes plays for New Native Theatre in St. Paul\, and performs as a stand-up comedian. As a leader and connector within her community\, she uses humor and storytelling to share her culture and break Native stereotypes. She hopes to pass down a love of her culture to her children\, while also leaving a legacy of a powerful Anishinaabe woman.—Trish Cook is a Red Laker with deep roots in South Minneapolis. She has been entertaining audiences for years with her humor and expressive storytelling. In addition to her individual performances Trish was a third of the nationally recognized Ojibwe Comedy Trio\, NDN Way Comedy and is currently focused on kwe comedy with Ace BAE Comedy! Big Auntie Energy Comedy! \n—KFAI’s MinneCulture programming is made possible by the support of the State of Minnesota and the Arts and Cultural Heritage Legacy Amendment. \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe.\n \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation\, and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band Davina and The Vagabonds in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA\, which she now describes as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” She was adopted by her much older stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed away when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says.\n \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player where she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath\, and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom.\n \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school\, which morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail\, and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band\, and worked [her] ass off every day since.”\n \nDavina and the Vagabonds shine every time they play. To date\, they’ve performed in forty-five states\, twelve European countries\, and two Canadian provinces. Not to mention\, they’ve earned feverish acclaim from the Chicago Tribune\, NPR\, and more in addition to performing on BBC’s international favorite late-night program Later… With Jools Holland and appearing on PBS’s Bluegrass Underground.\n—\n“Davina and the Vagabonds combat heartache with sugar and sass.”  DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE \n\n“Singer\, songwriter\, guitarist and “Boss Mama” Colleen Myhre has connected with a loose band of hard-rocking desperados and dubbed them the Jebberhooch.  Together\, Boss Mama and the Jebberhooch put out dusty\, dirty\, gritty blues that rumble across the stage like a beat-up sedan over a Mississippi Delta dirt road.  Their sound is a shake-and-baked helping of country soul\, blood harmony and deep groove funkiness.   \n\n\n \n\nThank you to our sponsors\, partners\, & neighbors: \nSummit Brewing • DuNord Social Spirits • RKR Ganja Beverages • Nobool Presents • KFAI 90.3FM • Mpls.St.Paul Magazine • The Zen Arcade • Longfellow Rising • Lake Street Council • Minnesota State Arts Board • Moon Palace Books • Arbeiter Brewing\n\n \nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2025. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.\n \nThe Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests. A masterful Grammy Award-winning violinist\, singer/songwriter\, actor\, and composer\, Lisa has an uncanny way of taking those audiences with her wherever she goes.\n—\nRecognized for her work as violinist and vocalist for the ground breaking Jewish Roots band The Klezmatics and as fiddler for the “Downtown” Celtic band Whirligig\, Lisa is also known for her scoring\, performance\, and music direction in the two time Tony award-winning play\, Indecent. She had an on-screen cameo and compositions featured in Sex and the City; has performed in Sting’s Broadway musical The Last Ship; and her song Gonna Get Through This World – with words by Woody Guthrie – was hailed by Pete Seeger as “a piece of genius”. Lisa’s playing and stories are fun and poignant\, and her voice has been praised by the LA Times as “hauntingly emotional.”   —\nDi Bayke Klezmer Band (backing band for Lisa Gutkin) plays the energetic party music of Eastern European Jewish tradition. A supergroup made of celebrated Twin Cities musicians\, including Pat O’Keefe\, Sarah Larsson\, Josh Rosard\, Daniel Lentz\, and Anthony Afful; Di Bayke has collectively studied with master-artists from klezmer tradition\, including Lisa Gutkin of The Klezmatics\, Ethel Raim of The Pennywhistlers\, and Michael Alpert of Brave Old World. Di Bayke’s adventurous takes on beloved Klezmer and Yiddish sounds encourage audiences to get on their feet and explore family stories of journey\, roots\, and home. Bayke is Yiddish for “tall tale”\, and is an acronym for Backyard Klezmer Ensemble\, which is where the band got started: playing outside during the COVID pandemic. (say: “Dee Bye-keh”)\n—\nAhmed Yusuf & Araa Ensemble is the project of Minneapolis-based author and educator Ahmed Ismail Yusuf. Committed to revitalizing the Somali musical genre of Qaraami\, Araa Ensemble brings together star vocalists and instrumentalists from the Midwestern Somali diaspora. Araa Ensemble has played their repertoire of Qaraami\, which JD Steele describes as “Somalia’s blues\,” at St. Thomas University\, St. John’s University\, and been featured on the Twin Cities’ Jazz88. The ensemble creates an intimate\, living-room atmosphere and invites audiences in to feel like members of the band. \nhttps://www.mprnews.org/story/2025/04/04/somali-blues-and-black-soul-music-in-cross-cultural-collaboration\n\n\n\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
