This September, in collaboration with some of Minneapolis’s most prominent artists, activists, and community support organizations, we present Frogleg Thursdays: #UNITY Edition. This series is about joy, love, and camaraderie with friends, family, and fellow humans. Just as importantly, this series is about sharing, lifting, giving, and advocating to and for people in need within our city. Each week, a portion of proceeds will go directly to local orgs such as Families Supporting Families Against Police Violence, TruArt Speaks, and The D.I.V.I.N.E. Institute. Major drives for food, clothing, and health items will also be held on-site for donation to local homeless camps, shelters, and pantries. Here’s an opportunity to do good, y’all. Let’s show everyone what Frogleg Family is all about. In September, we boogie for a purpose! #UNITY!

Frogleg is an island breeze, a highway cruise with the windows down, a mountainside ramble, a New Orleans night out. Their music is steeped in sounds and lyricism of improvisational rock and roll, reggae, soul, carribean jazz, bluegrass, americana, and folk, among others – if it has to be contained to a category, World music suits it best. Chock-full of impressive songwriting ability and instrumental virtuosity, and with two released full-length studio albums, a live album and a third studio album in the chute, this 6-piece ensemble of artistry has nowhere to go but up.

Kevin Washington was born in 1975 in Detroit, Michigan to cosmic musicians and scholars Donald and Faye Washington. His musical career began at the tender age of five with his debut performances at the renowned Detroit jazz festival. As a young musician Kevin also wowed crowds at jazz festivals in Chicago, Alabama, and Connecticut. The Washingtons moved to Minneapolis when Kevin was thirteen years old, where he continued to play, perform, study and develop his skills. In 1996, Kevin went on to New York City to study jazz at the New School for Social Research, where he studied with jazz legends Charlie Persip, Chico Hamilton, and Cecil Bridgewater. While in New York, Kevin discovered his love of teaching music and taught rhythm section fundamentals at the Harlem School of the Arts. Kevin expanded on his teaching roots, spending ten years with McNally Smith College of Music. He has fourteen years serving the community at Walker West Music Academy. Kevin¹s talents as a drummer and composer have made him a favorite among musicians from New York to Minneapolis and beyond. He currently leads his own group called Kevin Washington’s Ra Spirits, which highlights incredible artists in residency. A musical giant in his own right, Kevin has performed with such griots as Reggie Workman, Roscoe Mitchell, Rodney Whitaker, Antonio Hart, Chico Freeman, James Carter, Fred Wesly, Roy Brooks, Marcus Belgrave, David Murray Big Band, Fred Hopkins, Craig Taborn, and James Newton to name a few.
