Get, ready Longfellow: Three months after the surprise closing of Patrick’s Cabaret, a new Minneapolis live music/arts venue is coming to the space at the corner of Lake Street and Minnehaha Avenue.

The Hook and Ladder Theater & Lounge (3010 Minnehaha Ave. S) will open its doors September 2 with a grand-opening concert from Minnesota blues-folk great Charlie Parr.

Additional shows are lined up throughout September and October. The preliminary offerings are diverse, featuring a chili cook-off, rockers Eleganza!, Americana ace Erik Koskinen, and local reggae masters Dread I Dread, along with the League of Longfellow Artists Art Crawl.

Tickets go on sale Friday at noon via the venue’s website. Most tickets are around $7-$10, with $1 of each sale going to maintain the historic building.

The Hook — apparently it’s cool to call it that — will boast dual performance stages, a state-of-the-art digital sound/lighting system, and a spring dance floor, according to its Facebook page. Specific capacity is still being figured; Patrick’s held around 125 people.

The venue will be operated by new non-profit organization Firehouse Performing Arts Center (FPAC), named after the building’s original use as a firehouse. FPAC’s mission statement is defined as “a place where artists of all classes, cultures, and origins can begin, grow and mature as artists,” according to a press release issued Tuesday. Organizers say the focus will be on providing an intimate environment for live music and other arts and community events.

“In addition to ticketed concerts and theatrical presentations,” FPAC executive director Chris Mozena tells City Pages, “the Hook and Ladder will feature a wide variety of original programming, including programmed community events, open stages, artist-curated showcases, an open house series, the Minnesota Association of Songwriters’ residency program, and the DIY Artists educational series.”

Patrick’s Cabaret vacated the building in late May after occupying the space for 16 years. Patrick’s continues to operate as a nomadic arts organization, booking shows in collaboration with existing venues.

Here’s the current events calendar for the Hook:

September 2: An Intimate Evening with Charlie Parr

September 10: The Pistol Whipping Party Penguins and the Evergreen Grass Band

September 17-18: LoLA Art Crawl

September 17: LoLA After-Party and 1st Annual First Responders Chili Cook-off

September 21: Hellbound Glory (Reno, Nevada) and Eleganza!

September 30: Crankshaft & the Gear Grinders

October 7: Erik Koskinen Band, with special guest Randy Weeks (Austin, Texas)

October 15: Fall Reggae Party with Dread I Dread and special guests

The Hook will also host a theatrical presentation of Patrick Scully’s Leaves of Grass: Uncut in October.
