When accordion player, Gertie Lopez (Tucson, AZ) draws air into her instrument, several centuries of musical history flows out.

Lopez plays waila, the musical tradition of the Tohono O’odham Nation, spanning across Arizona into Mexico. When Spanish priests and colonizers came to the Southwest in the 18th century, they introduced fiddles, guitars, and Western European music to the Indigenous musicians — the musical tradition of waila was born. At its center, waila, is happy dance music reminiscent of polka, schottische, mazurka, chote, two-step, cumbia and the scoring for, Kwayla, Tohono O’odham square dance.
