The Brass Messengers are recording a live album at the Hook & Ladder!
Join us for a wild evening with The Brass Messengers and their special guest Siama Matuzungidi. The whole evening is being recorded for release in 2019.
The Brass Messengers are a Minneapolis/St. Paul sprawling fun factory of ten musicians. Music of choice is anything that fits into the twisted brass tubing, from inspired originals to sing-a-longs and covers from around the globe. Truly, a joyful noise.
A street band playing mostly original music inspired by global sources, they formed from the annual rubble of the Heart of the Beast Mayday Parade. Their musical origins were found in the music of Africa, the Caribbean and Balkans. They play whatever works, throwing in a country song to the crying drinkers, a high-speed polka or two for the Midwest dancers, running in circles with the little ones, activating gatherings of our activist kin or a bit of Black Sabbath for the metal crowd. But mostly, it is an original music that rises from the heart of the band that can only be described as a homegrown Minneapolis street music sound.
Siama Matuzungidi was deeply influenced by the soukous music of rural DR Congo (then known as Zaire) during his youth. He grew up in the Bakongo region, immersed in local traditions of music, storytelling and dance. He taught himself to play guitar at age 12, and later joined the band Cavacha in Kinshasa. He then moved on to Uganda and onward to Kenya; his later homes were in Dubai and Japan, and he is now based in Minneapolis.
